"Nairobi Half Life" from director Tosh Gitonga is a box office hit in Kenya and is the country’s official contender for the best foreign language film Oscar. The true-to-life gangster drama was produced by German director Tom Tykwer and backed by support from the Deutsche Welle Academy.
Germany’s contender for next year’s Best Foreign Language Oscar is "Barbara" - a period drama set in 1980s East Germany. The film is already a success story for actress Jasna Fritzi Bauer, who shines in a supporting role. Bauer went straight from acting school to a job with Vienna’s Burgtheater, one of Europe’s most acclaimed theaters. Now she seems poised to conquer the film world.
The new German psycho thriller "Das Kind” tells the gruesome tale of a serial killer who tracks down and kills pedophiles. Thrillers are rare in German cinema and director Zsolt Bács tips his hat to several Hollywood classics in this effective, low budget shocker.
Detlev Buck one of Germany’s most successful, and most versatile, German directors. He’s done comedy, social drama and even children’s films. Now, Buck is trying his hand at something completely different: the world’s first 3-D period film.
