Steiff - Bears with a Button in Their Ear
It’s 109 years old, the teddy bear, known and loved by children all around the world. The cuddly toy with the name ‘55PB’ (55 cm, seated; P for plush; B for ‘beweglich’, the German for ‘movable’) was invented in 1902 by Richard Steiff, the nephew of Margarete Steiff. The addition of the word ‘teddy’ comes from the American president Theodore "Teddy” Roosevelt, who was a passionate bear hunter. The small soft toy became a huge success. Several million have been sold since 1903. But before a teddy bear can be sold, it has to go through tough safety tests.
