    Cambodia is mourning the death of King Norodom Sihanouk. Hundreds of thousands of people gathered in the streets of the capital Phnom Penh to watch as his coffin arrived from Beijing, where he passed on October 15 at the age of 89.

    As a child, Norodom Sihanouk went to French schools in Saigon and Paris. In 1941, at the age of 18, he was placed on the throne in Phnom Penh by the French Vichy government, which had been supported by Nazi Germany. The French colonists saw in him a naïve boy who could easily be manipulated. Later they would learn they had been mistaken.

    After the end of the Second World War, the young king made his graces among the allies. At first, he supported the new French government under de Gaulle. But he took advantage of the chaos of the Indochinese War and declared Cambodia's independence on November 9, 1953.

    At the beginning of the 1950s, France was still fighting a guerrilla war in Vietnam and was thus politically and militarily weakened. The Viet Minh, who, among others, had received support from the Cambodian resistance, defeated the French in the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954, thus ending their colonial rule in Asia.

    Representing Cambodia as king was not enough for Norodom Sihanouk; he sought a more active role in politics. In 1955 he abdicated from the throne to become the country's first prime minister. He stayed in office for 15 years and had virtually no opposition.

    Norodom Sihanouk kept his country out of the Vietnam War as far as he could. But in 1970, he was ousted by US-backed general Lon Nol, as the US wished to prevent Cambodia from being used to harbor Vietcong fighters.

    After being ousted, Sihanouk took exile in China. His followers formed an alliance with the Communist Khmer Rouge and fought against the new government. In 1975, the Khmer Rouge took Phnom Penh and offered Sihanouk the office of prime minister. Sihanouk (shown here, fourth from right, with his wife, left, and a top Khmer Rouge leader) accepted.

    Sihanouk watched the terror and destruction the Khmer Rouge wreaked on his country. In 1976 he was placed under house arrest in the royal palace for voicing criticism of the regime. During the reign of terror under Pol Pot, over 1.7 million Cambodians were killed.

    In 1979, the Vietnamese army marched into Cambodia and put an end to the Khmer Rouge. Once again, Sihanouk sought asylum in China. In 1982, he formed an exile government which in 1991 negotiated the end of the Vietnamese occupation. That same year, he returned home and was crowned king for the second time a year later in 1993.

    After returning to Cambodia, Sihanouk's health started to deteriorate. He repeatedly travelled to China for treatment for multiple strokes, diabetes and cancer. In 2004, he abdicated and his son Norodom Sihamoni took the throne.

    Throughout his time in power, Sihanouk was accused time and again of sitting on the fence with regard to politics - to secure Cambodia's independence, he went back and forth between the West and East, and followed different political trends. Nonetheless, his popularity among his people never died down.
