29 budding media professionals from 21 countries have begun their Master's program at DW Akademie in Bonn. They're the fourth group of students taking part in the International Media Studies program.

Unique program
Siham Ouchtou from Morocco (left) and Haneen Abualrous from Jordan are just two of the new 29 students. The Master's program is unique in Germany and is offered by DW Akademie together with the University of Bonn and the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences. Additional support is provided by the German Academic Exchange Service and the state of North-Rhine Westphalia.

DW Akademie Director Gerda Meuer spoke at the opening ceremony in Bonn. She stressed that well-trained media professionals are vital for a credible journalism sector. "We want you to be part of your country’s development."

"There's an inextricable link between the creation of a public sphere and democracy," said Dr. Marc Jan Eumann, North-Rhine Westfalia's State Secretary for Federal Affairs, Europe and the Media.

What bits of advice could they pass on to the new students attending the two-year program? Student representatives Christine Bukania and Tilman Wagner gave the 29 new students some DO's and DON'Ts for adjusting to IMS life in Bonn.

Media Development
Dr. Dorthea Rüland, General Secretary for the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD): "Issues such as climate change, drinking water quality and nutrition can only be addressed within an international framework. Media development is part of that."

Outlook
"Our mandate is to educate as well as train," said Professor Dr. Michael Krzeminski, communications professor at the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences.
