Charles Phan was one of the first chefs to give Vietnamese food a wide audience at his Mission restaurant that opened in 1995. He and his family moved it three times, and expanded the empire significantly with Heaven's Dog and OTD, but the flagship remains the star. It's been at the Ferry Plaza since 2004 where Phan continues to break new ground -- Slanted Door was one of the first Asian restaurants to champion organic and sustainable ingredients and to implement a serious cocktail and wine program. The modern surroundings hint at the contemporary take on the food. Last year, the Phans opened Wo Hing General Store in the original Mission space, offering Chinese street food.
