Alan Moore Conjures with Occupy Comics

Alan Moore, the legendary comics malcontent and wizard (really), has teamed with Occupy Comics, a group of comic book creators who have joined forces to support the Occupy Wall Street protestors. It's said the pen is mightier than the sword, but is the wand? Perhaps we'll now find out.

Among the other writers and artists participating are Mike Allred, Shannon Wheeler, Dean Haspiel, Charlie Adlard, Marc Andreyko, J. M. DeMatteis, Joseph Michael Linsner, Steve Niles, Tim Seeley, Ben Templesmith, Amanda Palmer, Darick Robertson and David Lloyd, with whom Moore created the Ows fave V for Vendetta.

As a show of support, Occupy Comics is creating a Kickstarter-funded anthology that will be "a time capsule of the passions and emotions driving the movement" and will "tell the stories of the people who are out there putting themselves at risk for an idea."

Moore is planning to contribute a prose piece that »

Patty Jenkins Won't Be Handling Thor's Mighty Hammer After All

Once upon a time, director Patty Jenkins was chosen to helm the sequel to Thor, the recent super-successful Marvel superhero super-spectacular. Because women are rarely put in charge of such high-profile, big-budget films, there was much rejoicing throughout the land. Sadly, this fairy tale doesn't seem to have a happy ending…yet.

Deadline is reporting that Jenkins has exited the Thor 2 project. This parting of the ways is being chalked up to the oft-cited "creative differences," a vague catchall phrase that can mean anything from "We have a scheduling problem" to "We don't think you should assert your ideas into a project whose template is a proven winner, having grossed $448 million — just look pretty and say Action."

That last excuse would especially apply to a film that was a sequel…hey, Thor 2 is a sequel. Now, I'm not saying that's what happened here; I'm just sayin'. Of course, »

Yes, Virginia, There Really Is a Trailer for 'The Cabin in the Woods'

6 December 2011 8:56 AM, PST

In an effort to further convince us that a movie called The Cabin in the Woods truly exists, Lionsgate has finally premiered a trailer, days after releasing a new poster. Who knows, this flick might actually make it to theaters this time.

Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's new film, which Whedon has dubbed "the horror movie to end all horror movies," promises to make you rethink everything you thought you knew about "cabin in the woods" flicks. But based on what's in this trailer, there doesn't seem to be much new ground being broken. In fact, it looks eerily familiar.

Truthfully, the premise is pretty beat. A bunch of horny young people descend on a cabin in the woods. There's drinking, drugs and dirty dancing. But, what they don't know (and we do know, oh too well) is that someone is stalking them. They are to be punished for their hedonistic ways. »

The 'Evil Dead Remake' Will Have A Female Lead Character

5 December 2011 8:40 PM, PST

Diablo Cody recently revealed that the The Evil Dead remake she's been hired to rewrite definitely has a female lead character instead of "Ash." And no, her name is not "Ashley."

Diablo Cody appeared on MTV to talk about her comedy Young Adult, and mentioned a few key things about the new Evil Dead script, including that the lead character is a "she." Check it out:

The lead character, a drug addict, "becomes insane and difficult to control [without drugs], which makes it impossible to see that she's actually possessed".

And we heard from an industry insider that the most recent version of the script credits only the two original writers, with the name Diablo Cody nowhere to be found. Maybe the "new"-er version of the script will credit her?

More Proof That Entertainment Journalism Is A Joke

5 December 2011 3:26 PM, PST

David Denby, staff writer for The New Yorker magazine, reviewed the film The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo after seeing a press screening specifically for that purpose. Even though the review was positive, he violated what marketing people like to call "a review embargo" - meaning they didn't want anyone to post their reviews until a specific date. Scott Rudin, the fim's producer, is massively upset and is ranting and raving that his embargo was broken. But is a review embargo even ethical?

Imagine this: a studio, or a marketing company hired by the studio, invites you to private press screenings of their film releases so that you can write a review of the film for your magazine or website. Doesn't that sound great? It happens all the time, for this website and larger ones, on a daily basis. They get pissed if you go to the screenings but never end up reviewing the films, »

Facts about the 'Star Trek' Sequel

5 December 2011 9:04 AM, PST

News is starting to slip out about J. J. Abrams' upcoming sequel to his successful 2009 Star Trek reboot. Wait, since the flick isn't due until May 17, 2013, perhaps "upcoming" isn't exactly the best word. Let's go with "forthcoming."

It has been revealed that the villain of Untitled Star Trek Sequel will be played by failed wolfman Benicio Del Toro. A while back, there was a rumor circulating — spread by a website that shall remain nameless, but was Not Planet Fury — claiming Del Toro would be taking the role of Khan, the operatic Latin scoundrel played by Ricardo Montalban in the original series' "Space Seed" episode and reprised on the big screen in 1982's Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. But that rumor has been squashed.

I repeat: Benicio Del Toro will Not play Khan.

It was also announced that ex-RoboCop and occasional college professor Peter Weller has signed for a role. »
