5.0 out of 5 stars That's not a bad book! 11 Feb 2009
Format:Board book
This book was given to my (then) five and a half month old daughter as a Christmas present from her penguin loving Auntie. It has very quickly become her favourite book.
The illustrations are lovely- simplistic but drawing on a variety of real species of penguin which makes it much more appealing to look at. There are a good range of textures for babies to explore- although currently Lelaina is only interested in the fuzzy tummy on the cover which she likes to scratch, and the furry baby on the final page-she is always very eager to pinch the fur in her fingers, and often complains when the book is closed!
The repetition of the text makes me sure this will remain a fun book for some time to come as when she gets older I'm sure she will enjoy reciting the story herself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super board book from Fiona Watt 9 Jun 2008
Format:Board book
with a different touch, even to the front cover!

From the back cover:-

'This delightful series of board books is aimed at very young children.
The bright pictures, with their patches of different textures, are designed to develop sensory and language awareness.
Babies and toddlers will love turning the pages and touching the feely patches.'

10 sturdy board pages in the popular 2-page spread, with a line of clear, easy-to-follow text on each.
This book is further enhanced by those 'patches' and the repeat on the words:-

'That's not my penguin'.

Colourfully illustrated throughout, by Rachel Wells.

Example of text:-

'That's not my penguin.
Its wings are too velvety.

That's not my penguin.
Its head is too silky.

That's not my penguin.
Its .....'

until a positive result is achieved!

Super book which appeals to the youngest participants in our Library tot group, with the more observant eager to turn the page to find the little mouse as much as touch the 'feely' bits!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute 16 Feb 2013
By Caroley
Format:Board book
That's Not My Penguin is part of the Usborne `Touchy-Feely Books' series (Titles include many other `That's not my ...' to suit all tastes!) and is a sturdy board book with bold pictures.

Every page has at least one, and sometimes two, touchy-feely sections and the text describes it simply but in a way that's still entertaining. Even the penguin on the front cover has a fuzzy tummy!

If, like me, you are an old hat at Usborne books and love to hunt for the little yellow duck then I am sorry to say he doesn't feature in this particular story. There is a mouse to spot on every page instead though, so all is not lost. I must admit that I do miss the duck but that's just me being silly and sentimental!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful series of books! 17 Jan 2013
By Jade
Format:Board book|Amazon Verified Purchase
Bought the 'That's not my monkey' book for my niece for her 1st birthday, and was a great decision!
She is now 19months old and am often buying her books from the series!
They have all different themes for all special occasions from Christmas to Easter, and they are all wonderful. I even send her the occasional surprise book in the post and she loves them.
Young children love the touchy-feely range of book but they often can be quite delicate with lots of different things going on. However, this series is great, the rounded board pages are hard-wearing and there are no little doors and things that can be easily ripped off! And simple large illustrations that are very cute!
This one in particular is very cute, and she has loved it! I will be buying these for my niece until she has the whole collection because I know she will still enjoy them till at the least the age of 3!

5.0 out of 5 stars Touchy Feely at its best! 10 April 2014
By Kairra
Format:Board book|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love these books. We have a big collection of these here at home and my daughter has had many, many hours and days of entertainment from them. I started her on these at about 6 months of age and at 16 months now she still loves to read them.

Each page, including the cover, has a picture with part of it being made of materials that encourage touch, like fur or silk. The wording on each page is simple and rhythmic, making it almost like reading a poem. I find that these books serve many purposes; the material encourages tactile play, the easy use of language helps develop interest in reading and the use of grammar encourages specific lingual habits that aid later learning, and the subjects covered in the book help the child begin to identify those things in reality (like tongue, beard, mane etc). You also find a small white mouse on each page and I found that as my daughter grew she began pouring out the mouse, which led her on to pouring out each item that applied to her, like body parts.

A wonderful and varied series of books that every toddler home should have!
