Everywhere, just for you

Reading anywhere anytime

In our hectic everyday lives, it’s nice to be able to relax and read a good book once in a while. However, the opportunities are scarce and often conditions are not optimal for reading, especially when you’re on the move. The lighting conditions for instance are either not convenient or not good for reading comfortably.  Many people find that they have to twist into awkward positions to optimize the lighting conditions which is not ideal when you're trying to unwind and relax.  The reading light from Philips allows you truly relax and immerse yourself within the text that you are reading without disturbing others around you.  It also makes the perfect travel accessory as its lightweight, portable and comes with its very own carry case.

Reading in bed

Some people really like to finish their day and relax by reading a book for a while in bed just before they go to sleep – but they do not want to disturb their partner, who might already be asleep.  The reading light is perfect in this situation as it provides excellent illumination levels without disturbing others around you.

Reading bed-time stories

Kids also love to settle down in the evening by reading bed-time stories but when Mum or Dad switch on the general lighting it becomes far too bright for them to fall asleep.  The Philips reading light is perfect for kids to use, it provides superb light levels and is cool to the touch thanks to LED technology, therefore its completely safe for kids to use.

Safe & Simple

The Philips reading light is safe and simple to use.  Integrated LED technology means that the reading light is cool to touch and has a long lifetime.  The reading light has three levels of illumination to choose from, simply press the on/off button to scroll through the illumination levels:

Safe and Simple

If you have it on the lowest level of illumination the reading light will last for approximately 9 hours, if you have it on the highest level of illumination the reading light will last for approximately 3.5 hours, etc.

Charging

No need for batteries, to charge the reading light simply connect the cable to the reading light and plug into a USB port.  For the reading lights first charge, Philips advise that the reading light should be charged for 6 hours, subsequent charging should only require 3 hours.

Charging

Easy to clean
The Philips reading light is easy to clean, simply use the protective sleeve that the reading light comes in.  This soft sleeve will wipe away any marks or fingerprints.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worse buy ever!, 22 Jan 2010

This review is from: Philips LED Reading Book Light (Kitchen & Home)
Hard to know where to start - yes, it is a light, yes, it fits into a paperback -just,anything even slightly bigger leaves unlit spaces. It also makes reading very uncomfortable. I am a fast reader so moving it constantly left and right, then turning over and starting again is tricky. I resort to taking the light out, laying it down on my knee, turning over the page, then starting all over again. The left hand side of the page when the book has just started is particularly difficult. The light is plastic and reduces the crispness of the print and it becomes a greyish blur. It fingermarks very easily because it has to be handled so much and is VERY difficult to clean, the instructions are just icons meant to cover all languages, and indicate only the direction you should wipe it - but with what? The only section in English is a long diatribe telling me how and how not to dispose of it when finished (I've got some pretty good ideas myself!) Now comes the worse part - you can only recharge it through the USB port of your computer. Brilliant! I wanted to take it away with me but can't as I don't carry my laptop with me, I can't take it into hospital for the same reason. These were my main reasons for buying it. This more or less rules out taking it anywhere unless I can access a computer. What is wrong with a straightforward electric plug charger, like a mobile phone and similar gadgets. Oh, I really don't like it, and after reading this review through I think I have got to send it back - [] is a massive amount to waste. Beware, think very carefully before you buy this article!

2.0 out of 5 stars "All art is quite useless" - Oscar Wilde, 25 Sep 2010

Mr. T. Berriman "berriman_toby" (UK) - See all my reviews
    (VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Philips LED Reading Book Light (Kitchen & Home)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
If you are the kind of person to pay a premium for pretty things, even if they are less functional than their design-challenged counterparts, then this is for you. However if you actually like to *read* books as opposed to posing with them, then you may want to read on before you consider purchasing this.

To better understand my opinion here maybe it would help to explain what I was hoping for from this book light. Drawn in and deluded by the advertising I was hoping for something that was a simple joy to read, had almost no light spill, and (considering the price) was somehow a great improvement on my clip on booklight that cost me a couple of quid.

    On the plus side:
+The product IS very pretty, and comes carefully packaged in a hard plastic case for protection, with a soft slip case for the clear plastic part of the product which doubles as a cleaning cloth.
+There are three brightness levels available, a feature that seems rare on book lights.
+The light provided is perfectly even, which feels to me like it reduces strain on the eye.
+The product also has an internal rechargeable battery.

This is where things start to go wrong:
-You soon miss having AA batteries which would allow you to swap out quickly when the battery goes mid-reading
-For some unfathomable reason the internal battery can only be charged by being connected to a usb cable. No mains adapter is provided.
-Taking the booklight out and repositioning it every time you turn a page interrupts the flow of your reading and quickly becomes an annoyance
-Due to the fact that you are reading through a plastic sheet the text can appear slightly out of focus and grey. This is made worse if the page isn't completely flat. I don't know how this may affect people who wear glasses.
-The clear screen is a magnet for fingerprints and scratches. So much so that you almost spend more effort protecting the screen than actually reading. You will soon feel like you are peering through a dirty window.
-Because of the predisposition to muck and damage you feel obliged to keep the booklight in its case. This means that you have to pack/unpack it every time you start or stop reading.
-The product causes more light spill than any other book light I have used. On the highest brightness it lights up the room, particularly from the sides. This pretty much negates its purpose for many people (to be able to read without disturbing bedfellows)
-While having a single button to serve as on/off and brightness adjust makes for a prettier design, Philips seem to have hit upon a fault with their construction. Specifically sometimes after turning the device off it can be difficult to get it to turn back on again for a minute or two after!
-Unless you only read sat up with the book resting in your lap you may find this product unwieldy. You have to hold the book in one hand and the light in the other (often adjusting the position of the light as you read - depending on the size of the book). This soon becomes uncomfortable, and if you are like myself and occasionally like to read lying on your back with the book in via air or other strange positions, give up now!

I should point out that a previous reviewer had a good idea which may mitigate many of these issues: place the light *underneath* the page you are currently reading.

All in all this product is a piece of art: gorgeous but quite useless. And horrendously overpriced. I would highly recommend a cheap clip on torch style book light instead; far better value for money, more comfortable, and less light spill.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not great, 7 May 2010
This review is from: Philips LED Reading Book Light (Kitchen & Home)
A good light, but it is slightly blue and the fonts seem a bit gray under the light.
Difficult to handle or keep it on top of a page. I am not certain why the charging is only through a USB, but once it is charged you can use it in a book for a few hours. I am thinking of sending it back. I agree about the finger marks issue, which is quite a problem, since I constantly have to wipe it.
