Los Angeles, Aug.
14 /U.S. Newswire/ Former Speaker of the California Assembly
and L.A. mayoral candidate Antonio Villaraigosa sharply criticized
America's growing economic inequality and the impact of the war
on drugs on minority communities.
"We've heard an awful lot about morality over the past few days, Villa-raigosa told an energetic crowd of activists and reporters. "But morality is not just about what goes on in the bedroom, it is about who we leave behind. When a young person goes without health care, when we incarcerate more people than anywhere else in the world, when our schools are like prisons, when we engage in a systematic process of deforestation and environmental abuse, it is immoral and it is wrong."

Q: One of the things that was a little surprising at the
Republican Convention was the extent to which they tried to characterize
the meaning of your eight years. Bush said you had coasted through
prosperity. Cheney said, these have been years of prosperity in
the nation, but little purpose in the White House.

RIO BRAVO, TAMAULIPAS Mexico's new national government
of Vicente Fox hasn't taken office yet, but already it confronts
its thorniest political problem. This challenge comes not from
the country's former governing party, the PRI, which lost control
of the presidency for the first time in 71 years. Instead, a group
of maquiladora workers in Tamaulipas have spotlighted a growing
crisis affecting over a million workers the right to form
independent unions, and thereby raise wages, in two thousand foreign-owned
factories, the maquiladoras.

The Mugging of the Honorable Loretta Sanchez

Crack.crack! So sounded the Southern overseer's whip on the
back of black slaves being punished for violating the white man's
plantation rules. It is the same sound made by Al Gore at the
Democratic National Convention plantation as he and his gofers
whipped the stuffing out of Loretta Sanchez, star Democratic Congresswoman
from Orange County.

The Evolution of American Political Conventions
- From Political Reform to
Global Non-Event
By Walter Truett Anderson
American political conventions are becoming irrelevant to
the purpose for which they were created, and turning into something
else entirely part coronation, part happy hunting-ground
for all manner of causes and movements, and part a sort of global
crystal ball which the rest of the world peers into for some clues
as to what the superpower is likely to do next.
