Using the Library

The State Library is the major reference library for the people of Victoria. It is not a lending library, so you can't borrow books to take home.

This section explains what you need to know about the Library.

Finding information

You can find information at the Library by browsing or by searching.

Registering as a user

As a registered Library user, you can use the catalogue to request books and journals from storage to use in the Library. You can also search for articles and article references in databases from home if you live in Victoria.

Using the catalogue

How to use both the new-style Search and the Classic Catalogue Search. Learn how to search effectively, request items from storage, save copies of your search results, and add tags, comments and reviews to items.

Using the MMBW Plans online

These digitised plans provide a significant historical cartographic record of Melbourne. Learn how to explore them with easy-to-read explanations of how to use the interactive tools, browse the plans and search for plans.

Resource & information guides

Some of these guides cover resources related to the Library's collections, others are on topics regularly requested by Library users. 

Viewing items by appointment

If your research requires the use of material such as maps, pictures, original manuscripts or rare books, you will need to make an appointment to view material.

Using & copying Library materials

Information about the ways you are permitted to use, copy, reproduce or publish any materials created, owned or made available by the Library online or onsite. 

Using computers

The State Library has computers available for public use. Most provide full web access, including searching the Library's catalogues and finding articles in databases. Although no word-processing facilities are available, Notepad software is provided on most computers.

Accessing the internet

You can access the internet at the Library using our computers and network or via our wireless hotspots with your laptop or PDA.

Using wireless services

Laptop and PDA users can access a free service in the Information Centre, the La Trobe Reading Room, Experimedia, the Redmond Barry Reading Room, Journals & Magazines and the Heritage Collections Reading Room. An Optus service is also available across the Library for Optus Wireless Connect account holders.
