Keith Murdoch Oration

The State Library established the Keith Murdoch Oration in 2001 to honour the memory of Sir Keith Murdoch and his outstanding contribution to the Library. The Oration reflects the Library's commitment to promoting debate within the community on knowledge and culture.

Sir Keith Murdoch, chairman of the Herald & Weekly Times Ltd, had a strong interest in the arts and took a leading role in cultural affairs. From 1939 to 1945 he served as President of the Trustees of the Melbourne Public Library (the precursor to the State Library of Victoria), the National Gallery of Victoria and the Melbourne Museum. His leadership during those years was informed by a lively interest in literature and a newspaperman's commitment to making knowledge available to the community. His contribution helped to shape the Library into the great institution it is today.

Sir Keith Murdoch's legacy continues today through the generosity of his family. In 2001 the Murdoch family donated $5 million to the creation of an exhibition space in the Library - the Keith Murdoch Gallery.

The inaugural oration, held in October 2001, was delivered by Sir Keith's son Rupert Murdoch. His theme was 'The Human Wealth of Nations'.
