Redmond Barry Lecture

The cultural focus of the Redmond Barry Lecture reflects Sir Redmond Barry's contribution to the development of Melbourne and Victoria through his work founding many of its cultural institutions. These include the Library, Gallery, Museum and the University of Melbourne. Given by leading cultural figures, the lecture attracts a broad audience who are enthused by ideas and issues relevant to the prevailing and emerging cultural climate.

Sir Redmond Barry was not only instrumental in founding the State Library, he also served as president and chairman of the Board of Trustees from 1856 until his death in 1880. In recognition of this the Redmond Barry Lecture is a central part of the State Library's Foundation Day celebrations.

In 1999 the then Premier of Victoria, the Hon Jeff Kennett MLA, delivered the inaugural address. Brian Johns, former managing director of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation delivered the lecture in 2000.
