Australian Modern Exhibition Opens Tonight

11 March 2004

Media are invited to the opening of Australian Modern: The Architecture of Stephenson & Turner, a new exhibition at the State Library of Victoria. A qualified architect, the Hon. Justin Madden MP, Minister for Sport and Recreation, Minister for the Commonwealth Games, will tonight open the exhibition and launch the book of the same name by Philip Goad, Rowan Wilken and Julie Willis.

The architectural firm, Stephenson & Turner, has been described as the ‘colossus of Australian architectural practices.’ Drawn mostly from the Library’s own collection, the exhibition explores the firm’s work which extends into every aspect of Victorian life from hospitals, banks and factories to universities, state and religious buildings and residential designs. Stephenson & Turner created many of Melbourne’s architectural landmarks: the (recently demolished) MCG Members’ Stand and the St Vincent’s, Mercy, Royal Melbourne and Royal Children’s hospitals.

Australian Modern: The Architecture of Stephenson & Turner opens to the public tomorrow. Until 6 June the exhibition is open daily from 10am – 5pm. Admission is free.
