Applications Open for State Library Creative Fellowships

2 February 2004

The State Library Creative Fellowships are once again on offer to Australian writers, artists, academics, composers and researchers.

It’s the second year the Victorian Government and State Library of Victoria have run the $600,000 Creative Fellowship program which encourages the scholarly, literary and creative use of the Library’s rich collections. The Victorian Premier, Steve Bracks said 'That the Creative Fellowships demonstrate the Library’s place as a hub of intellectual inquiry and discourse'.

Up to eight Creative Fellowships are available to explore the Library’s collections in 2004-05.

The Fellowships are awarded annually by the State Library on the advice of an independent committee of the Library Board of Victoria.

The Fellowships are for periods of up to one year, with stipends of $12,500 for three months, $25,000 for six months and $50,000 for twelve months. Research projects can be in any area of the Library’s collections and are open to Australian residents who may be independent scholars, creative writers, artists, composers, academics or developers of new media across a broad range of disciplines.

‘The Fellowships represent the State Library of Victoria’s strong commitment to original scholarship, writing and creative endeavour and will help position the Library as a centre for ideas and public debate,’ said Anne-Marie Schwirtlich, Chief Executive Officer and State Librarian. ‘The chosen Fellows will be working in the Library using our unique collections, sharing their ideas with the public, and producing publications or work based on these collections,’ Ms Schwirtlich said.

‘We are extremely grateful for the State Government’s generous support in helping us to set up the Creative Fellowships, and for the support of the AGL Shaw Foundation,’ Ms Schwirtlich said.

AGL Shaw is one of Australia’s foremost historians and his foundation is known for its philanthropic support of history and the arts.

Applications close Wednesday 31 March and can be obtained on the State Library website. The Fellowship recipients will be announced during the Library’s Foundation Week, early in July.

Applicants are encouraged to attend a general information evening to discuss proposals before they are submitted. This will be held on Tuesday 24 February from 6pm-8pm, in the State Library’s Village Roadshow Theatrette, Entry 3, La Trobe Street, Melbourne.
