The weekend started off violently in San Francisco with three separate incidents that left a 9-year-old boy shot in the stomach, a man in his 50s dead from knife wounds and a 25-year-old man injured in a drive-by shooting.
The incidents, which occurred in just over a 24-hour period that started Friday morning, happened in three different neighborhoods. Police declined to release names in any of the attacks.
The boy, who apparently did not suffer life-threatening injuries, was reported shot around noon Saturday in the 1100 block of Turk Street in the Western Addition.
He suffered a single gunshot wound to the lower abdomen and was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, police Officer Albie Esparza said.
Esparza said investigators are trying to figure out how or why the boy was shot. "We don't know if it was a random, stray bullet or other circumstances," he said.
Friday morning in Hayes Valley, a man was fatally stabbed in a fight with another man, Esparza said. The incident was reported at 10:50 a.m. in the 500 block of Page Street.
The man, who was in his 50s, was reportedly wielding a shovel at another man, who was in his 40s, and struck him in the head. The younger man then produced a knife and stabbed the man holding the shovel, Esparza said.
The stabbing victim was taken to San Francisco General, where he was pronounced dead, Esparza said. The suspect remains hospitalized at San Francisco General and has not yet been charged.
Police suspect possible gang involvement in a Mission District shooting that was reported at 5:15 p.m. Friday near the intersection of 20th and Bryant streets.
Two suspects in the back of a green car driven by a woman shot at a 25-year-old man in another car, Esparza said.
The victim, who was struck in the shoulder, was taken to a local hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening, he said. No arrests have been made and detailed descriptions were not available.
"We're looking into the possibility it was gang-related, but it is not confirmed at this point," Esparza said.
