Children's film series in Berkeley

We don't much like a free market here at The Poop. So when we found out that the Elmwood theater in Berkeley was starting its own children's movie series, in competition with our The Poop Presents mega-franchise, my initial instinct was to make like Home Depot and drive them out of the neighborhood.

Peter Pan: Metrosexual fun for the whole family.

Peter Pan: Metrosexual fun for the whole family.

But then I found out that the series was being supported by several local PTAs. If there's one thing I learned as a child growing up in public schools in the Bay Area, you just don't f--- with the PTA.

So this is to let you know about the holiday film series at the recently restored Elmwood, sponsored by the Elmwood Merchants Association. Their next movie is the underrated recent live action "Peter Pan" (2003), which plays this Saturday at 10 a.m. and noon and Sunday at noon. The neighborhood is a great place to hang out -- there are lots of good places to eat and even a kid-friendly book store nearby.

"The Bugs Bunny and Roadrunner Movie" plays Dec. 15-16, and "Stuart Little" is scheduled for Dec. 22-23. Rialto Cinemas Elmwood is located at 2966 College Avenue at Ashby. Tickets are $2 and proceeds go to the PTAs (*shudder*) of Malcolm X Arts and Academic Elementary School, Emerson Elementary School, John Muir Elementary and Le Conte School. For tickets and showtimes go here.

New baby blog from a The Poop alumnus ...

Normally when a founder of this blog departs, we would write a special goodbye post. It would includes a montage of their greatest posts, which everyone could read while humming that Green Day song they always play during the clip show when anchors leave "The Today Show" and when big sitcoms go off the air.

lilsugar.com

But when The Poop blogger Heather Maddan left last month, I decided to wait, because she was departing to help start a new baby blog, Lilsugar.com, which debuted this morning. Check it out here.

Heather's contributions to The Poop waned after she had her second child late last year, but she was hugely instrumental in getting the blog started, and contributed behind the scenes even when she wasn't posting. Not only was she the only founding member who was actually capable of having a baby, but she was level-headed, organized and gave a lot of input into the direction of the blog. And she wrote some of our most entertaining and popular posts, including this one. And this one. (Are you humming the song? Hum it!)

Congratulations and good luck, Heather! Read More 'New baby blog from a The Poop alumnus ...' »

Babbling coherently: Huge new parenting site debuts

Mark Morford sent me an e-mail this morning pointing out Babble.com, a New York-based parenting supersite that debuted this week.

After reading Babble for about a half hour this afternoon, I found it quite entertaining and a bit threatening -- because they basically have The Poop's not-especially-original mix of shopping/entertainment tips, snark and self-deprecating child-rearing stories to appeal to the new urban parent, and execute it on a much larger scale. (Is this how it feels to own a small book store after Wal-Mart moves to town?)

It's ironic that my minor complaints about the site -- it intentionally baits readers into flame wars and it's a bit too commercial -- are the same things that people have told us repeatedly that they don't like about The Poop. Poetic justice?

Check out Babble for yourself, let us know what you think and be sure to come back and visit us once in a while!
