Adventure Playground: Looks like a death trap to me

Check out Pat Yollin's fascinating story in today's Chronicle about Berkeley's Adventure Playground. At a time when parenting seems to be heading in ultra-protective directions, this place might be the last haven for kids who want to run wild.

After reading the story, I'm sure about two things:

1. When I was a kid, I would have thought that this place is -- in the words of a 7-year-old in 1978 -- totally rad.

2. As a parent, the idea of a do-it-yourself junkyard playground freaks me out. Just based on this picture, my child will never ever ever ever go there. Ever. Period.

In my opinion, it comes down to is where your priorities lie: Is it more important for your child to express themselves at all times? Or is your principal concern keeping them away from a bunch of rusty exposed nails that some "artist" left lying around while trying to live out his Burning Man fantasies in a place where kids play?
