The Poop Presents ...

The Poop Presents "Labyrinth" is this weekend!

.

Just a reminder that the closing of the Parkway doesn't change our screenings of The Poop Presents: "Labyrinth," which are still set for 2 p.m. matinees this Saturday and Sunday.

I think this 1986 Jim Henson film is a lot of fun, especially for the nostalgia factor. It's a bit on the scary side (see David Bowie's hair in this video), so judge for yourself if you should bring the little ones. I let my son see it when he was 3 years old, and he survived. Also note that THIS IS NOT THE SNUGGIE MOVIE. Although you will probably be widely admired if you show up in one anyway.

All the details are here.

The Poop Presents: "Labyrinth"

There's no movie that fits The Poop experience like "Labyrinth." It has Jim Henson puppets, a spectacular mullet, a 1980s-infected David Bowie and a jailbait-era Jennifer Connelly. And just my luck -- the one weekend Will at the Cerrito Speakeasy could schedule this movie, I'm in Arizona for the weekend.

No need for a babysitter ...

"Labyrinth" will go on without me, but this WILL NOT BE THE SPECIAL SNUGGIE SCREENING. I'm shooting for April or May -- possibly with a family movie aimed at older kids. Here are the details for "Labyrinth" ...

The Event: The Poop Presents: "Labyrinth"

The Dates: March 21-22 (Saturday and Sunday)

The Time: Sat. at 2 p.m.; Sun. at 2 p.m.

The Place: Cerrito Speakeasy; 10070 San Pablo Ave.; El Cerrito

This movie is on the mature side, but not quite at "Coraline" levels of scariness. My son sat through it last year and seemed only mildly terrified -- mostly when the goblins invade Sarah's bedroom. I was frightened mostly by the college-aged kids who knew every word to the Bowie songs. The last time we screened it the print was surprisingly good.

Entry is just $5. Adults without kids are welcome too. (Reminder! The Cerrito serves beer and wine.) More information about the Cerrito Speakeasy is available here.

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is this weekend!

reelingreviews.com

Just a reminder that The Poop Presents: "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is set for this weekend at the Cerrito Theater in El Cerrito. Showtimes are 3 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Beer and wine will be served. More information here.

We were supposed to show "Kung Fu Panda" but couldn't get the print and had to make a last-minute switch. Sorry for any confusion and we'll understand if the crowd is a little sparse. This is the Johnny Depp "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." It's rated PG for some action, mild language and general strangeness.

We're planning to go with our 3-year-old on Sunday. (He made it through "Igor" without getting scared, so this will be easy.) Hope to see you there!

The Poop Presents: NOT "Kung Fu Panda"

UPDATED 9/17: We lost the "Kung Fu Panda" print at the last minute, so we're showing "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" instead. Sorry for the confusion.

With a limited amount of good older movies, we've started including a few newer ones as well in our The Poop Presents slate. We'll try to focus on good children's films that you might have missed. "Kung Fu Panda" wasn't overlooked by any means (it made more than $200 million at the box office) but you probably haven't had a chance to watch the movie while sitting on a couch and eating a Greek salad.

collider.com

Keep in mind that the Cerrito is considerably more family-friendly than your typical theater, with roomier seating, healthier food options, beer and wine and a lounge area in the lobby in case you kid melts down. Here are the details:

The Event: The Poop Presents: "Kung Fu Panda" "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"

The Date: September 20-21

The Time: 3 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday

The Place: Cerrito Speakeasy; 10070 San Pablo Ave.; El Cerrito

I didn't have much hope for "Kung Fu Panda" when I saw the first movie posters, but it got a 73 Metacritic rating, which is astronomical for a kid film that's not made by Pixar. My colleague Mick LaSalle, who doesn't always love animated films, wrote in his review that the movie "wakes up the formula with imaginative scenes, lively and likable characters, genuinely funny moments and animation that's detailed and beautiful to behold."

Admission is $5. We're probably going on Sunday. Hope to see you there!

Five reasons to see "Charlotte's Web" this weekend

Just a second-to-last reminder that The Poop Presents: "Charlotte's Web" is screening at the Cerrito Speakeasy theater this weekend; 3 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

gbtc.com

This is the cool 1973 cartoon with all the songs and Debbie Reynolds as the voice of the spider, not the Dakota Fanning live action one. In case anyone is on the fence, below are five good reasons why you need to see this movie:

1. The Cerrito is the rare establishment that shows movies to kids while serving beer to the parents.

2. In the little-seen sequel, "Charlotte's Web 2," Wilbur sent his piglets to the local public school, even though it scored a "1" on the API index. He also volunteered 20 hours per week. Read More 'Five reasons to see "Charlotte's Web" this weekend' »

The Poop Presents "Charlotte's Web" is next weekend

I know what you're thinking, parents. You can't even turn on the television any more, because if the talk isn't about John Edwards and his mistress, there's a news story about a grandmother who let her kid ride on the top of a station wagon. (Which, to my frustration, she totally stole from me without giving appropriate credit.) And the only decent kid movie this summer has featured a robot cleaning up after the apocolyptic self-destruction of mankind.

timeinc.net

So why not mark the calendar for next weekend's (Aug. 16-17) Cerrito Speakeasy screenings of "Charlotte's Web," a 1975 animated film that's so fun and sweet and family-friendly that none other than "The Waltons" creator Earl Hamner Jr. wrote the script? This is perhaps the only politically correct occasion where you can hang out with your kid in public, drink beer and sing the lyrics to "Zuckerman's Famous Pig." Also, I checked, and the Cerrito has a very, very limited amount of swine on its menu.

All the details are here. No spiders were killed during the making of this blog post.

The Poop Presents: "Charlotte's Web"

After a fierce The Poop comments section debate, we decided to go old school and stick with the humble, radiant and terrific 1973 version of "Charlotte's Web." It's still a few weeks away, but I thought you might want to mark your calendar.

en.wikipedia.org

We'll probably show the 2006 live action version at some point before our kids are grown and we're all writing the grandparenting blog, but for now we're sticking with the original movie based on E.B. White's book. Here are the details ...

The Event: The Poop Presents: "Charlotte's Web"

The Date: August 16-17

The Time: 3 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday

The Place: Cerrito Speakeasy; 10070 San Pablo Ave.; El Cerrito

I probably saw this film 10 times as a youngster, usually preceded by the Orson Welles-narrated mongoose-versus-cobra epic Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. I think this is our first musical since the original Poop Presents film, "The Muppet Movie." Another piece of "Charlotte's Web" trivia: it was written by Earl Hamner Jr., the guy who created "The Waltons."

Willy Wonka -- is the remake better?

Yesterday, as part of some field research, I asked if the recent "Charlotte's Web" live action remake is better than the original animated film. While readers seemed to be split on that debate, it seemed as if more people wanted to talk about the Willy Wonka movies.

The one true Wonka?

pdxpipeline.wordpress.com

The one true Wonka?

We've considered screening one or both of the "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" movies as a "The Poop Presents" entry. I would definitely want to play the original first, but I thought that the Johnny Depp remake was surprisingly good. We took our son to it as a baby brigade movie, and had an enjoyable time. I liked Johnny Depp's Anna Wintour-inspired spin on the character, liked the fact that Tim Burton tried to do something that was more in tune with Roald Dahl's book and liked the new Oompa Loompa song. (Even better in Spanish.)

Forget the headline on this post, which was shamelessly crafted to drive up traffic so we can all retire next week. I won't ask which one is better, because that's probably going to be a one-sided comments thread. But for the purpose of screening it some day, is the new "Wonka" also worthy of consideration?

"Charlotte's Web" -- is the remake better?

Thanks for coming out a few weeks ago to our presentation of "The Iron Giant." Even with an incredible day outside and "Kung Fu Panda" opening the same weekend, we were half-full on Saturday and had a full house on Sunday.

gbtc.com

We're figuring out the schedule for the next few months, and thinking about showing "Charlotte's Web" for August -- either the old animated version or the newer live action one with Dakota Fanning. Normally I'd default to showing the original (notice I'm not also asking you about which version of Willy Wonka we should screen) but the newer one got good reviews and I've never seen it. I'm also a bit prejudiced against the old one, because Danny Bonaduce does one of the voices, and he's been acting really creepy lately.

Old "Charlotte" or new "Charlotte"? (Or should one of us just sit on the stage and read the book?) Your vote in the comments.

Arrive early to avoid the crowds ...

To answer a few frequently asked questions, adults without kids are welcome, beer and wine are served even during matinee screenings and it's totally cool to bring an infant.

We're dealing with competition from the critically acclaimed "Kung Fu Panda" this time, but we've been having full houses or sellouts more often than not lately. So if you're traveling great distances or bringing kids who are really counting on it, I'd suggest arriving on the early side.

See you there!
