Viticulturist and 9th-generation land owner James Ontiveros, red jacket, talks with his college friend and now winemaker, Paul WIlkins, about the best ways to protect their crop from birds for the upcoming season at Rancho Ontiveros Vineyard in Santa Maria, Calif. The land that Rancho Ontiveros Vineyard looks over is a parcel of the original Mexican land grant owned by James' great-great-great-great-great grandfather and was originally used as a cattle ranch. Now is used to grow Pinot Noir grapes for Native9 and Alta Maria labels. Photo by Nick Lucero/SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE
