Top 10 names for Newsom baby No. 2
Parents around the city should be delighted to hear that mayor Gavin Newsom and Jennifer Siebel Newsom are expecting a second child, a boy. Their first child Montana will soon be a big sister.

The Newsoms are expecting their second child.
Gavin might be on his way to Sacramento but he and his wife plan to keep their home base in S.F., and any time you have a politician with kids living in your city it has to be a good thing for families. So congratulations to the Newsoms!
That said, we can't help but have a little fun and brainstorm some potential names (some of which are a little snarky, and we apologize for that).
1) Muni. Believe it or not, Muni is a name, though typically given to a girl, according to BabyCenter.com. This isn't high on our list and is admittedly a mean-spirited suggestion but Gavin did vow at one time to fix our city's transportation system. Plus, it goes nicely with Montana.
2) Brian. When you have a daughter named Montana, this name seems a little traditional, but if their son's born with a beard, well then, he'll have to be named after the Giants closer.
3) Getty. It would be thoughtful to name their first-born son after the man who helped fund the PlumpJack wine shop that has grown into a multimillion-dollar enterprise. But Gordon is an old-fashioned name. Now Getty, that has a cool ring to it.
4) Balboa. The PlumpJack Hospitality Group owns the Balboa Cafe, a San Francisco institution where Gavin is known to hang out, along with 30-somethings paying for their single malt scotches with platinum cards. And then there's the Spanish explorer who was the first European to lead an expedition to the Pacific from the New World.
5) Jack. Jennifer is plump (with a bump) after all, so wouldn't Jack be appropriate?
6) Harvey. Gavin is a champion of gay rights, so why not give a nod to Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California?
7) Castro. This would be a dangerous name to pick as the right-wing conservatives might assume the Newsoms named their child after Fidel. But here in San Francisco we'd know the real reason behind the name.
8) Diego. If Gavin plans to run for governor again, this might be a way to win the hearts of those SoCal voters. Yet maybe he should go with Francisco instead to also re-win the hearts of local voters.
9) Cash. It's a hip-sounding name that's climbing in popularity...and of course Newsom did draw voter attention with his Care Not Cash program.
10) William. His father was William and then there's Bill Clinton, who endorsed him for governor, and Willie Brown, who endorsed him for mayor.
Bonus name: And at the last minute we thought of yet another: Joe, which definitely goes with Montana.

Will Newsom junior attend public school?
I realize that it's early to begin a debate on whether Jennifer and Gavin will send their child to public school in San Francisco. After all, the Newsoms' baby is still many months away from being born. And who knows where they'll be living in six or seven years when Newsom junior is ready for kindergarten. They probably hope to be in Sacramento. No matter, it's certainly an interesting question to ponder.
San Francisco Bay Guardian editor Tim Redmond already expressed his feelings in a recent editor's note:
Elected officials should send their kids to public schools. If the San Francisco schools aren't good enough for the mayor's kid, then the mayor needs to be working harder to fix them. I know it's none of my business, and that you have to do what you think is right for your own child and all that, but ... if the mayor, or the president, or the school superintendent, or the school board members, or the supervisors choose private schools, then they're saying that public education is good enough for the poor kids, but not for their own.

Newsoms are preggers: Will S.F. become baby friendly?
At 4 p.m. today, SFGate's City Insider blog confirmed rumors that Mayor Gavin Newsom and his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom are expecting a child.
Yipee! San Francisco parents rejoice! A baby Newsom is on the way! Does this mean the mayor will begin to put children in this city first?
San Francisco has fewer kids than just about any city in the country (though in several months we'll have one more head to count). Why so few children? The homes are unaffordable--so most people flee to the surrounding burbs where they can get more than two bedrooms. S.F.'s public schools are improving but they're still wildly uneven. More kids go to private school here than in any other major city. And those private schools are pricey! Parks and Rec have definitely rebuilt many of the neighborhood parks but the city department also just announced that they're required to cut $11.4 million.
Could a baby-crazed mayor help our city focus on its children? Will Newsom be more inclined to make our city welcoming to families? (Or will our mayor be too focused on his run for governor to make a difference?)
