Among the two-thousand lucky fans, friends and family who attended the swell S.F. Giants-MLB World Series soiree last night at the Academy of Sciences, none were too disappointed that our red-hot National League champs were not in attendance.
Wisely, all team members chose to head home post-their practice to get ready for today's World Series Game 1 against the Texas Rangers at AT&T; Park.
Hope and high spirits soared over the spread, quickly organized by the Giants, McCalls and Hartmann Studios, which featured bounteous bars and an EssEff neighborhood-themed spread of delish delicacies (think: North Beach=Italian, Chinatown=Dim Sum, Japantown=Sushi, Ghirardelli Square=Irish Whiskey and chocolate, etc.).
"We started planning this a week ago," explained Hartmann Studios President Mark Guelfi. "We just worked like it was going to happen. We loaded up 25 trucks over the weekend knowing that we'd either deliver them to the Academy. Or unload them on Monday."
McCalls Executive Chef Lucas Schoemaker started ordering food on Saturday. By Monday, he'd pretty much cornered the market on foodstuffs in the hue of black-and-orange.
"There won't be any Halloween candy left by the weekend," said Schoemaker, with a laugh.
Of course, most guests donned a range of sartorial styles in the same color scheme.
Except, that is, for Rick Daum, spouse of S.F. Giants spokeswoman Shana Daum.
"So long as he wears orange to the game, I guess I can let him get away with his 'Dodger blue' shirt tonight," joked Daum.
Though ressed in orange, Brendan O'Meara was a little surprised to find that no one else at the party was wearing a Giants T-shirt.
"The invite did say, 'Creative attire'," noted O'Meara, who, by day, works at the Irish Consulate. "I hope someone else shows up wearing a T-shirt. I was actually dressed all day in suit."
Just at that moment, a sartorial "save" arrived as Ashkon Davaran entered the Academy.
Dressed in ultimate Giants fandom (classic cap and a Brian Wilson "Beard" T-shirt), Davaran, the creator of the runaway (totally unofficial, yet inspirational) Giants 2010 Anthem based on the Journey song, "Don't Stop Believing," this Internet sensation was mobbed like the rock star he's become.
The evening's other hero? Giants manager Bruce Bochy who was swarmed all night by grateful admirers.
The former Padres player already has experience with the World Series: once as a player and once as the former Padres manager.
"This will be Bruce's third World Series," said his wife, Kim Bochy. "We're hoping the third time's the charm."
Having never seen Bochy up-close we were surprised by his height. He's tall: Gavin Newsom-style tall, if not taller.
Our tall and expertly coiffed mayor has officially proclaimed this week, "San Francisco Giants Pride Week."
He explained that while his World Series wager with Arlington Mayor Dr. Robert Cluck will include the usual exchange of native foodstuffs, it will also require the losing mayor to spend a day in the winning mayor's city, working with local youth and community services.
"I imagine there'll be lots of BBQ sauce. But if we win, Mayor Cluck will be working with the kids of the Giants' Community Fund's Junior Giants program," he said, hopefully.
"There's also some talk about me wearing a six-gallon cowboy hat," said Newsom, slightly incredulous. "Those Texans are just trying to mess with my hair."
Also keeping the orange-and-black faith was Renel Brooks-Moon.
"This one feels different because this team is different" said the spirited Giants public address announcer. "During any given game, any one of our guys is given the chance to be the star, the hero of the day."
