The neighborhood ambience, far right, makes it a popular spot for family outings, and its downtown San Mateo location means it's easy to drop in.
Third Avenue Sports Bar and Grill: If you're a fan of the sort of thin-crust pizza that comes from Amici's, that will add to the attraction of San Mateo's Third Avenue Sports Bar and Grill.
Located a couple of doors down from Amici's original location, the sports bar offers Amici's full pizza menu, straight from Amici's brick pizza oven. Since those offerings range from the simple New York (mozzarella and tomato sauce, $8.25 for an individual size) to the more specialized New Haven white clam ($11.45), the standard sports bar menu goes up a notch.
What also takes Third Avenue's menu up a couple of notches are value-priced items like fish and chips made with wild Alaskan cod ($9.95) and a generously portioned steak sandwich, with fries and onion rings ($11.75).
Burgers ($6.75-$9.75) range in size, come with fries or potato salad, and include chicken and portobello versions. Items like shepherd's pie ($7.25), bar snacks and various salads and sandwiches, both hot and cold, round out the selections.
Ten beers are on tap, including Negro Modelo, Blue Moon and seasonal offerings such as Liberty Ale and Sam's Seasonal Ale, along with plenty of bottled beers and a dozen wines by the glass.
It's a pretty neighborhood-y sports bar, which means welcoming for families. And 10 TVs means a good choice of college and pro games.
