T-shirts that grow trees

Special to the Chronicle

Buying clothes can be good for the environment, or says online retailer Zazzle, which has promised to donate money to green the planet for every t-shirt it sells between April 16 and April 24.

The Redwood City company has pledged up to $100,000 for planting up to 100,000 trees as part of its "Tree-Shirt ReLeaf" campaign, in celebration of Earth Day (April 22) and Arbor Day (April 24).

Zazzle will give the money to American Forests, a non-profit group that acts as a sort of Johnny Appleseed for reforestation. The organization funds others who handle the ground work of replanting land scared by forest fires or denuded by other activities.

Zazzle's program is being done in conjunction with - who else? - but U2 signer Bono and his EDUN Live project that promotes eco-friendly cotton making in Africa.

People who buy a t-shirt on Zazzle must use the promotion code "PLANTATREE09" at checkout for the company to make its $1 donation. Buying a t-shirt designed for the occasion by Zazzle and American Forests, and certified as 100 percent organic cotton by edun Live, will elicit a $4 donation.
