Tselogs, Daly City

A Filipino tapas cafe on Daly City's heavily foot-trafficked Mission Street, Tselogs offers crave-worthy plates, or silogs (a portmanteau for fried rice, or sinangag, and eggs, or itlog, in Tagalog, which accompany each dish), at equally worthy prices.

Owner Consuelo "Chel" Gilla, a native of Paranaque City (just south of Manila) opened the restaurant in June 2008 as a salute to the tapas cuisine that she says is prominent in that region.

The star silogs include the chicken sisig (minced chicken with lemon and garlic, $5.99), beef tapa (thin-sliced marinated beef, $5.99) and the longganisa (a sweet sausage, $4.99).

The lumpiang Shanghai (thin Filipino-style egg rolls, $4.99 for a silog plate or $3.99 for a side order of 12 pieces) is a standout, too, the lumpia so deliciously seasoned, you can eat them as quickly as you would a bag of chips. The secret, Gilla says, is adding oyster sauce to the filling and omitting extra salt: "It adds a good balanced flavor."

Come in for breakfast and take advantage of the would-be happy hour special from 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday-Friday: All silogs are $3.99 each. But don't wait too long - big crowds come by the dozens during the lunch and dinner rushes.

Added bonus: Tselogs is open from 10 p.m.-3 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, to fulfill those late-night Filipino food cravings.
