Downtown's hidden gem is Chez Papa Resto, tucked away in Mint Plaza off Fifth Street, across from the Westfield San Francisco Centre. The sophisticated and sexy interior features windows overlooking the expansive plaza, throne-like banquettes and glimmering black chandeliers. David Bazirgan produces beautiful combinations such as sauteed sea bass with fennel two ways, orange gastrique and black olive-tangerine vinaigrette. On nice days, there's also a sun-warmed patio that makes you feel a part of the city; it's a good place to enjoy the $23.95 three-course lunch ($18.95 for two courses).
Specialties: Kobe beef tartare; French onion soup; crispy frog legs with Riesling sauce; roasted monkfish bouillabaisse.
Lunch 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, until 3 p.m. Saturday; dinner 5:30-10 p.m. Monday-Friday, until 11 p.m. Saturday.
