Retirees and snowbirds are still the largest contingent moving to Mexico, but more and more young couples, some with school-age kids, have happily and successfully relocated.
Mexican law restricts foreigners from owning property within 30 miles of the coast, but you can now establish a real estate trust under which the bank technically owns the title but you have all the legal rights of ownership, including to improve, sell or will the property.
Guanajuato's narrow, winding streets, intact Spanish architecture and outdoor bistros give the city a European feel that appeals to expats.
Spend at least six months in a place before buying a house (or selling yours back home). The fact is, the place you fell in love with on a two week winter holiday may not be the same place in the summer.
Move to Valladolid and you'll be a short drive from Chichen Itza, one of the new Seven World Wonders.
Most of Mexico's major cities and tourist/expat destinations boast first-rate hospitals and doctors.
After work, go for a walk on Chileno Beach, Los Cabos.
Mazatlan's golden sand beaches are just part of its appeal for expats.
