San Leandro police fatally shoot woman in chase

December 31, 2010|By Will Kane, Chronicle Staff Writer

A San Leandro police officer shot and killed a woman he thought was trying to run him over in Oakland on Wednesday night, police said.

San Leandro police spotted a Jaguar they suspected was stolen around 10:30 p.m., said San Leandro Police Lt. Jeff Tudor. They pursued the female driver and her male passenger until they crashed in Oakland on Bancroft Avenue between 109th and Durant avenues, he said.

Then the female driver was shot to death by an unidentified San Leandro police officer, who believed the woman was trying to run him over, Tudor said. The passenger tried to run away after the crash but was arrested.
