Another Year

Everyone wants laughs, love and happiness but Tom (Jim Broadbent) and Gerri (Ruth Sheen) radiate a pure joy that attracts all sorts of souls. Director Mike Leigh strolls through a year in the life of this couple as they befriend Gerri's co-worker (Lesley Manville), a lonely lady who embraces the bottle. Major awkwardness? She's got a crush on their young son. Rated PG-13. At the Embarcadero Center Cinemas.

Depressing on an epic scale.

Budrus

A barrier meant to split Palestinians and Israelis produces the opposite effect when a community leader launches a nonviolent protest. The instigator in this documentary, Ayed Morrar, aims to save his village of Budrus, which sits in the path of the barrier. His movement falters until daughter Iltezam draws local women into the campaign. In Arabic, Hebrew and English with subtitles. Not rated. At the Lumiere and Shattuck theaters.

A highly unusual glimmer of hope about the Middle East.

The Dilemma

Best buddies Nick (Kevin James) and Ronny (Vince Vaughn) own an auto design business and pretty much behave like brothers. Everything's groovy until Ronny spots Nick's wife, Geneva (Winona Ryder), pawing another dude. That pushes Ronny into obsession mode as he frets about whether he should tell Nick. Rated PG-13. At Bay Area theaters.

Grapples hard with the thorny matter of honesty and relationships and trust.

The Green Hornet

Slacker playboy Britt Reid (Seth Rogen) gains a purpose in life after Daddy dies and he meets his capable employee Kato (Jay Chou). Dexterous Kato has built a super-fab vehicle, the Black Beauty, that can't be destroyed and carries all weapons imaginable. What do you do with such a sweet ride? Why, become superheroes while posing as the bad guys. Rated PG-13. At Bay Area theaters.

Nothing here but a concept and a marketing and merchandising strategy.

The Illusionist

An illusionist sees his world shrinking as that rebellious rock 'n' roll music catches on in the 1950s. Gradually his job market thins, and he accepts a gig in Scotland. He feels the magic may be slipping away, but then fan Alice glides into his life, adding sparkle and wonder. From Sylvain Chomet ("The Triplets of Belleville"). Rated PG. At the Clay Theatre.

A remarkable movie.
