Nobody wants to be sick on vacation, but one look at thousands of single-use plastic bottles tossed into landfills or rivers may inspire you to bring your own refillable bottle - and a water purification system. To keep your load light and your stomach safe, pack the SteriPEN Adventurer Opti. Just turn it on, place the UV lamp in your water (whether it's in a glass or bottle) and stir until the indicator light turns green. It's quick: Just 90 seconds for a liter of water. The UV light destroys bacteria, viruses and protozoa, letting you stay healthy and enjoy your travels.

What we liked: The Adventurer Opti is only 3.6 ounces (including batteries) and it's compact, making it easy to pack. The integrated LED flashlight helps when you're purifying water in the dark, or just as an additional light source.

Not so much: As opposed to the SteriPEN Classic, the Adventurer Opti takes CR123 batteries, which are a little more expensive and not as versatile in terms of usability in other battery-operated gear.

Vitals: SteriPEN Adventurer Opti, $99.95 from www.steripen.com.
