What's New: Pudong, Barrique, Enoteca Molinari open

WHAT'S NEW

December 19, 2010|By Paolo Lucchesi

Pudong: The prominent former Mecca space has been resurrected as this restaurant named after a district in Shanghai.

Pudong pays homage to China's colonial history by incorporating both Chinese and French dishes into the menu. Thus, diners may see classic beef tartare ($10) and chicken roulade ($14) next to spring rolls ($7) and firecracker chicken ($14). The chef is Jason Xu, last seen running the kitchen at the now-closed Shanghai 1930. 2029 Market St. (between Dolores and Church), San Francisco; (415) 252-0700 or pudongsf.com. Dinner Tuesday-Sunday.

Barrique: Jim Howell's vision for a new kind of wine experience has taken years to come to fruition, but it's finally arrived.

Barrique is a wine bar, but not. Though there's a more traditional list, Barrique offers a number of wines poured directly from barrels, like at a winery. Howell says the novel approach is meant to turn focus back to the wine itself; it also allows him to cut out the middlemen and keep prices reasonable. 461 Pacific Ave. (at Montgomery), San Francisco; (415) 421-9200 or barriquesf.com. Open 3-10 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.

Enoteca Molinari: This small, 25-seat wine bar has taken shape next door to A Cote. The chef is a familiar face - longtime Lalime's toque Stephen Jaramillo, who is offering an Italian menu of small plates and fresh pasta. 5474 College Ave. (at Taft), Oakland; (510) 428-4078 or enoteca-molinari.com. Dinner Wednesday-Sunday.
