What's New: Restored House of Shields opens in S.F.

WHAT'S NEW

December 19, 2010|By Paolo Lucchesi

The House of Shields is back - and looking better than ever.

The historic San Francisco saloon first opened in 1908. Since then, it's been through several hands, with tales to match.

But now Dennis Leary - the chef/owner of Canteen, The Sentinel and Golden West - has made it his goal to renew the bar's swagger and return the beloved watering hole to its original glory.

The restoration took months. Dark wood walls and signature statues were vigorously polished, the floor stripped to reveal vintage tile mosaic floors, and the booths given new flair.

Bar manager Eric Passetti and his team will sling the drinks, be it classic cocktails, frothy beers or simply a shot of whiskey. Leary isn't serving any food yet, but given that he operates his takeout spot, The Sentinel, directly next door, he speculates that he might explore some late-night snacks in the coming months.

House of Shields, 39 New Montgomery St. (between Market and Mission), San Francisco. Open from 4 p.m. Mon.-Sat.
