Jed York to hire GM

Team president Jed York said he will hire a general manager to run the 49ers' football operations.

What York won't say is if the new GM will get to replace coach Mike Singletary.

"We want to take our time before we make any decision like that," York said after the 49ers were eliminated from the NFC West race with a 25-17 loss to the Rams.

"You don't want to make an emotional decision right now after the game."

York would not commit to Singletary as his coach for the season finale, much less beyond this season.

"What bothers me is that we came into this playoff-caliber game and we didn't get it done and that's the bottom line," York said. "We have enough talent that we should have been the NFC West champion and we should have been competing in the playoffs."

York also made it clear he thinks the 49ers need to get a quarterback, and that the draft is the next place they can find one.

"Obviously, it starts with the quarterback," York said.

York said "money is no object" when asked if that would factor in his decision to fire or keep Singletary, who remains under contract two more years.

"Our object is to win the Super Bowl, year in and year out, to be there. We're going to make sure we get this right."
