The World Through The Eyes Of The Homeless

Too many people end up living on the streets — and mostly they are people like you, not just the mentally ill and chronically inebriated. As part of a project to communicate what life on the streets is like, Dr. Jan Gurley, a San Francisco internist known to sfgate.com readers as Doc Gurley, gave homeless people cell phones and asked them to e-mail her photos. In exchange, they got to keep the phones. The assignment: In a 48-hour period, photograph what you eat, what gives you joy and what threatens you or makes you afraid. She shares their photos here. This project was produced as part of the California Endowment Health Journalism Fellowships, a program of University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism.
