Jeff Reed - More than a one-game fix?

Jeff Reed, the 49ers newest kicker and former Pittsburgh Steelers stalwart, believes he's the 49ers kicker for the rest of the season. That's what Reed said in the locker room on Friday and that's probably what will happen. Joe Nedney apparently didn't feel right when he tried to kick this week, which necessitated the signing of Reed.

Reed comes along at the right time - a cold weather kicker set to kick in a cold weather game. Reed said last year in Cleveland he made two kicks with a windchill of minus 27 degrees whipping off Lake Michigan. Reed spent last week kicking at a local high school in the Pittsburgh area with snow on the ground.

Coach Mike Singletary said he called Reed after Nedney sprained his knee in after the Nov. 21 shutout by the Bucs. Freshly cut by the Steelers, Reed said he needed a week to get his thoughts together before he joined another team. He also didn't want to join the 49ers for just one game and then be unemployed again.

"I wanted to come in and be a part of the team," Reed said.

Reed is no choir boy. The internet is filled with compromising photos of him. He also missed seven of 22 field goal attempts this year in Pittsburgh and struggled to kick his kickoffs to land in the 20. The 49ers might want to add kicker to their off-season shopping list.

Personnel chief Trent Baalke said Nedney will undergo an extensive medical evaluation on Monday, but he doesn't anticipate Nedney returning this year. It makes you wonder about Nedney's future with the team. Last year, he missed the final two games with a hamstring injury.
