Shareholder "protection plan" signatures expected by Christmas

Without much fanfare, the coalition of unions warring with Gov. Schwarzenegger over his election agenda has been spending some money gathering signatures for a ballot initiative that might be best titled "Revenge."

With Schwarzenegger pushing Prop. 75, which would require labor unions representing government workers to get explicit permission from members before making political contributions, the unions' initiative applies a simlar hurdle for corporations.

Dubbed the shareholder proctection act, the measure would require companies to receive written permission from shareholders before spending money on campaigns. A corporation would notify shareholders of the amount of money it was proposing to spend on politics for the year, but would only be allowed to spend a percentage of that amount equal to the percentage of shareholders who signed off on the idea. New poll on union dues initiative

A poll done for a conservative think tank shows Proposition 75, called the paycheck protection initiative by its supporters, holding onto a shrinking lead in the Nov. 8 ballot race. The measure, which would require public employee unions to get written permission from their members before using their dues for political purposes, had a 49 percent to 43 percent lead in the survey of 600 registered voters. The telephone poll was done from Oct. 5 to Oct. 8 by the Charlton Research Co. for the Pacific Research Institute in San Francisco and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent. Teachers: You've got mail!

More than 90,000 California teachers are going to get a quick introduction to hardball politics today when they get an e-mail telling them their union is going broke. The e-mail, signed by a pair of teachers working with the Yes on 75 campaign, cribs from an affidavit filed in federal court in San Jose last week by Carlos Moreno, controller for the California Teachers Association. In the document, Morales says the union has spent more than $50 million fighting Proposition 75 and other initiatives backed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and needed a three-year, $60 a month dues increase to "maintain fiscal solvency." Morales also said that the union is looking for a new $40 million line of credit because without it "millions of CTA's members dues dollars are possibly at stake."
