The Spyrals: Bridge from psychedelia to present

BANDWIDTH

December 02, 2010|By Michelle Broder Van Dyke

This quartet sounds as if they're floating through the cosmos. The Spyrals play 12-string psychedelic rock with heavy effects. They combine the raw energy of the Stooges with the melodic shoegaze of My Bloody Valentine. It's a fiery ride through its turbulent melodies.

The S.F. group has produced a limited edition 7-inch featuring tracks "Love Me Too" and "Reflection." With explosive force, these songs roar to the gods of San Francisco past while singing of our present-day California: "The sunshine on the beach is fine / we've lost control underneath the darkness in my soul / because I'm in love with you." The guys say they are finishing up a new five-song EP and planning to record "an enormous amount of new material in the coming year." While we wait to hear the new tracks, we're going to check out their stellar live show.

One by one we all ended up in the same room with instruments and a shared rhythm.

What does your band name mean?

The name is a mystical representation of our endless journey through time and space.

Who are your musical influences?

The Rolling Stones mixed with some Velvet Underground and Creedence Clearwater Revival for good luck.

What is the ideal setting for someone to hear your music?

On a soul-searching road trip or at one of our shows.

What are the main themes for your songs?

Love, magic, war, time travel, dreams.

How has living in the Bay Area affected your music?

It's taught us to fly like a Jefferson Airplane and stay off the Starship. You can't fly that high for very long.
