David Chiu wows judges with his sweet inspiration

For the second year in a row, Board of Supervisors President David Chiu walked away with the top prize for the most creative dessert in the annual City Hall bake-off, with a deftly sculpted delectable he called ''Mud wrestling at the Board of Supervisors.''

His winning entry: a gooey chocolate bread pudding dotted with 11 fondant snowmen and snowwomen figurines each representing a member of the board. There was Supervisor John Avalos, chair of the budget committee, with a dollar sign; Supervisor Alioto-Pier with a swan, a nod to the problems facing the graceful birds at the Palace of Fine Arts' lake in her district; and foul-mouthed Supervisor Chris Daly throwing an f-bomb.

Chiu said that he and a close circle of his friends and political advisers worked well into Tuesday night preparing the edible creation for Wednesday's contest. ''I had been thinking about it for weeks,'' he said.

Boe Hayward, former aide to Supervisor Bevan Dufty, walked away with the award for most festive entry. His carefully crafted buche du noel carried the Giants theme -- black and orange cake with white frosting. Madeline Licovoli, who works in the clerk of the board's office, took top honors in the most tasty category with her ''Santa's thumbprint'' jam cookies.

This year's judges in the fourth annual contest, which was organized by the always entertaining Cammy Blackstone, an aide to Supervisor Carmen Chu, were Chronicle food critic Michael Bauer, local pastry chef Yigit Pura, and Ed Harrington, general manager of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. Harrington also may be in the running for interim mayor, once Gavin Newsom leaves next month for his calling as California's next lieutenant governor.

Other mayoral possibilities were on hand to sample the treats, among them Dufty, Chiu and Supervisor David Campos.
