16th Avenue steps Moraga Street at 16th Avenue

The stairways that scale San Francisco's hills are among the city's surprising delights, none more so than this - 163 tiled steps that scale Golden Gate Heights and double as a colorful zippered mosaic. The idea began with a single neighbor; the execution was an $80,000 labor of love that included neighborhood parties to make individual tiles. The ebullience is a fiery joy, especially as the winter sun descends. But at any hour, savor the contrast between the free-flowing mosaic and the block where it lands, a prim procession of orderly homes.
