Johnny Depp promised Hunter S. Thompson he'd shoot 'Rum Diary'

Johnny Depp is glad he was finally able to make a movie version of Hunter S. Thompson's "The Rum Diary" - because it fulfills a promise he made to the writer before his death.

The Hollywood star met cult author Thompson "many years ago" and claims he and the writer discovered a long-lost script at Thompson's home, which they agreed to work on as a film with director Bruce Robinson.

The script Depp and Thompson discovered was published as "The Rum Diary" in 1998, but the movie project fell through because Robinson had decided to take a break from Hollywood.

So Depp was delighted when the filmmaker revisited the proposal following Thompson's death in 2005, as he can finally fulfill his promise when the picture is released next year.

He tells Britain's Culture magazine, "Hunter and I, many, many years ago, unearthed this script in his basement. He thought it was pretty good, and we made this deal in the middle of the night that we'd make it into a film and produce it together.

"A year or two later, we'd had meetings with financiers etc. Our first choice to direct then was Bruce Robinson... (But) he didn't want anything to do with movies... Hunter made his exit, and I pursued Bruce like a bandit, a fiend, and we got him."

Depp famously played Thompson in the 1998 big screen version of his book, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."

Johnny Depp still wearing pirate teeth

Johnny Depp has been forced to promote his new movie with a crooked set of teeth because he hasn't yet found a dentist to remove the false set he wore for his role in the latest "Pirates Of The Caribbean" film.

The actor has spent the last few months filming "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," and he has been wearing unsightly semi-permanent dentures for his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow.

But Depp failed to have the teeth removed before he hit the promotional trail for upcoming thriller "The Tourist," so he has been attending red carpet events and interviews with a crooked smile.

He tells "Access Hollywood," "(I will have them in) until I can find a dentist to rip them out, essentially. They sort of have to be yeah, yanked out ... we just literally finished (filming) like, you know, last week."

Johnny Depp feels sorry for 'poor thing' Angelina Jolie

Johnny Depp feels sorry for his "The Tourist" co-star Angelina Jolie after witnessing her massive media following while shooting the movie in Italy.

The pair shares the screen in the new thriller and they spent several months working together on set in Venice, Italy.

Depp admits he saw the "ludicrous" side of celebrity while shooting with the Oscar-winner, as they were constantly trailed by photographers and had to be careful not to be pictured in each other's company.

He tells Vanity Fair magazine, "Poor thing, dogged by paparazzi, her and her husband (sic), Brad ... all their kids. There are times when you see how ridiculous is this life, how ludicrous it is, you know, leaving your house every morning and being followed by paparazzi. ...

"(We were) having to hide, sometimes not even being able to talk to each other in public because someone will take a photograph and it will be misconstrued and turned into some other s**t".

But Depp has praised Jolie for remaining "incredibly normal" despite her superstar status, and reveals he enjoyed her "wonderfully kind of dark, perverse sense of humor."

Josh Brolin proud of old pal Johnny Depp

Movie star Josh Brolin feels blessed to be friends with Johnny Depp - because the "Pirates of the Caribbean" star is the best actor alive.

The "W" star and Depp almost fell out when both were up for a lead role on TV show "21 Jump Street" in the mid 1980s - a part Depp eventually landed.

But the two actors have remained friends and Brolin could not be happier for his pal's success.

He tells Playboy magazine, "I have more respect for that guy than for most people out there because he... has done it his own way.

"He's found whatever his niche is, and it's a big one. What a f**king talent, man. Every movie I watch him in, I just thank God he exists."

And Brolin still recalls the classy way Depp dealt with the news he'd won the "21 Jump Street" role over his pal.

He recalls, "It came down to Johnny and me... He and I were at his apartment hanging out; our girlfriends were best friends at the time. Johnny had just finished a small part in 'Platoon' and was talking about what it meant for him to work for this great director Oliver Stone.

"The phone rings, it's Johnny's agent. He listens, hangs up, stuffs his clothes into his 'Platoon' duffel and just walks out.

"The next time I saw him I was doing a guest role on the fourth episode of '21 Jump Street.'"

Rep brushes off Johnny Depp's 'injuries' as fake

Johnny Depp's representative has laughed off rumors the actor has been injured filming the fourth "Pirates Of The Caribbean" movie after he was snapped sporting nasty cuts and bruises on his face during a night out in London.

The Hollywood star appeared to have sustained a bloody gash across his right eyebrow and a cross-shaped cut on his cheekbone when he stepped out with rocker pal Keith Richards in Mayfair on Wednesday night.

He was also seen sporting bruising on his jaw line and grazed knuckles on his hands.

Pictures of his battered appearance sparked reports online that Depp had been working a little too hard at pulling off his own stunts as Captain Jack Sparrow for Disney's forthcoming action movie, but his spokesperson has dismissed the concern and insists the injuries were all fake.

His publicist Robin Baum tells WENN, "He was in make-up from filming 'Pirates 4.'"

"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," starring Depp and Penelope Cruz, is due for release next year.

Johnny Depp 'launching record label'

Johnny Depp is preparing to launch his own record label and has dispatched staff to scour London for new talent, according to a U.K. report.

The Hollywood star initially embarked on a music career when he left school, playing with several rock groups before turning his attention to acting.

Depp remains a massive music fan and recently helped British band Babybird produce a new record by funding their studio time and even playing on several of their tracks.

And now the "Pirates of the Caribbean" actor is said to be ready to launch his own label.

According to Britain's The Sun, Depp has founded Unison Music and has hired talent scouts to search for new acts in the British capital.

A source tells the publication, "Johnny has always been passionate about music. He's taking a really hands-on approach to signing acts.

"Obviously he can't get to as many gigs as he would like but he's got a good team around him and will personally vet any signings that they make."

Johnny Depp would have played Alice in Burton's 'Wonderland'

Johnny Depp was so desperate to team up with his movie collaborator Tim Burton for "Alice in Wonderland" - he would have happily played the female lead.

Depp and Burton struck up a friendship after the Hollywood hunk appeared in 1990's "Edward Scissorhands," and they have made a series of movies together over the last 20 years, including "Sleepy Hollow," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street."

And Depp insists he would have played Alice in Burton's take on the Lewis Carroll classic just to get the chance to work with his pal again.

He tells Parade.com, "To be honest, he could have asked me to play Alice and I would have said yes - I would have done whatever character he wanted. The fact that it was the Mad Hatter was a bonus because it was a great challenge.

"There is some kind of connection, some sort of understanding that Tim and I have that is at most times unspoken. I do feel a certain amount of pressure like, 'Will this be the film where I disappoint him?' I try really hard just to come up with something that's very different and we haven't experienced together before."

Johnny Depp: 'Family life has changed me'

Johnny Depp credits his children and partner, Vanessa Paradis, with transforming him into a family man and putting an end to his wild ways.

"The Pirates of the Caribbean" star struggled with drug and alcohol demons after becoming famous, but he settled down after meeting Paradis in 1998 and welcoming two children with the singer.

And the actor is pleased he got his bad behavior out of his system in his youth because his children -- 10-year-old daughter Lily-Rose and son Jack, 7 -- are now his main priority.

He says, "Luckily I went down the (destructive) rabbit hole early on and now the rabbit hole is a different animal altogether, because my main focus is my kids and my family. I'm much calmer than I was years ago and that has a lot to do with raising a family, so my kids have calmed me 100 per cent."

And Depp also credits his peaceful home life in the South of France with allowing him to escape from Hollywood: "There's no talk of movies or work and, infinitely more importantly, the phone never rings. We take the kiddies on walks and picnics and it's the perfect existence. It really is a beautiful, simple life. And it's been a calming influence just to be able to have that special time with my kids."

Director returns to Jolie/Depp movie

Angelina Jolie's latest film project opposite Johnny Depp is back on track after the director returned to helm "The Tourist" just months after quitting the production.

Oscar-winning German moviemaker Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck was lined up to take charge of the picture, which will see Jolie play an Interpol agent opposite the Hollywood hunk, but walked away late last year throwing the project into jeopardy.

But the director, who reportedly cited creative differences with studio bosses for his decision to quit, is now back on board, according to Variety.com.

The movie has faced an uncertain future over the last year after a string of stars dropped out - Jolie replaced Charlize Theron and Depp joined after Tom Cruise quit.

The thriller, a remake of 2005 French film "Anthony Zimmer," is now scheduled to begin shooting this spring.
