It's Troy Smith ... for now

Niners coach Mike Singletary named Troy Smith his starting quarterback "as of right now." Don't expect that to change before Sunday's game against the Rams at Candlestick Park.

Alex Smith made that clear when discussing his separated left shoulder. He threw a little Monday for the first time in two weeks but has not been medically cleared to practice. Asked if he could play if he had to Sunday, he said this:

"If we weren't hitting. If it was flag football." And as for playing Sunday without practicing Wednesday or Thursday, when the bulk of the game plan is implemented?

"Honestly, I don't have much experience with that. As far as, I know other guys haven't practiced in a week, practice on a Friday and then go play. I don't have much experience with that. My feeling is I think it would be pretty tough, to be honest, especially where we're at. We're putting different things, obviously, each week, and adjustments and it's hard to pick those things up if you're not out there."

So what does this mean for Troy Smith? Read More 'It's Troy Smith ... for now' »
