(11-24) 17:42 PST ALBANY -- An Oakland man was killed this morning on eastbound Interstate 80 in Albany when his Toyota Corolla struck the rear of a big rig, whose driver may or may not have felt the impact, the California Highway Patrol said.

Witnesses reported that the car was weaving in and out of traffic lanes when it hit the right rear corner of the big rig's trailer. The collision caused the car to lose control and crash near the Buchanan Street off-ramp, the CHP said.

The victim was identified by the Alameda County coroner as Aaron Kruger, 59, of Oakland.

The big rig did not stop, and as of this afternoon investigators had not identified the driver. The accident is not automatically a hit-and-run, the CHP said, because it is possible that the truck driver wasn't aware he was involved in a wreck.

"It's not uncommon for big rig drivers not to know about a collision because of the weight differential" between vehicles, said CHP Officer Sam Morgan, an agency spokesman.

The only detail that witnesses were able to provide about the big rig, he said, is that the trailer was rust-colored.
