Sony: 3D 'best on a big screen'

Boss Hirai questions 3DS

3D is best experienced on a big screen at home - as opposed to a small one in your hands - according to Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kazuo Hirai.

His comments come as Sony prepares to go head-to-head with Nintendo in the 3D battle; the former sporting stereoscopic specs, the latter carrying a glasses-free portable.

Hirai believes the issue of 3D goes beyond whether or not gamers have to wear glasses though.

"I think 3D is best enjoyed on a big screen," Hirai insisted to industry bible MCV.

"The important thing for us is 3D combined with Move. The Move controller is not just about up, down, left and right but also depth control as well.

"And all that is really a home-based console experience, which to me is the right 3D experience given the state of the art we have today."

Sony has, however, had to push back updating the PlayStation 3 in preparation for 3D Blu-ray playback until October.

A firmware update adding the capability was supposed to be released this month.
