Valve promises '3 big surprises' are coming

You're going to be "shocked", reckons Gabe

Valve has promised "at least" three "big surprises" for gamers in the next 12 months. Half-Life 3, anyone?

Unfortunately - in typical, teasing style - it refused to be drawn on any detail of what the surprises entailed.

Speculation over a Half-Life 2: Episode 3 announcement was rife before E3 in June, but never materialised. Valve cancelled a planned press conference at the LA Expo very suddenly - which was supposed to reveal a "surprise".

Maybe that was one of the three?

"I can guarantee you people are going to be surprised at stuff we do. That isn't going to stop any time soon. I'm just laughing because... people will be shocked again," Valve boss Gabe Newell told the latest issue of PC Gamer.

"We have three pretty big surprises in the next 12 months at least."

Bring 'em on, Gabe. Bring 'em on.

Newell has also revealed that Valve is working hard on biometrics to better understand their customers - and, potentially, to bring freaky new heart-monitoring thrills to gameplay.

You can read the full, fascinating interview with Valve on its history in PC Gamer UK - which is with subscribers now and in stores tomorrow.

Order the mag here and have it delivered to your door.

i know we have all been waiting for Half-Life 3(or Half Life 2 episode 3,not sure which)..but would it be that much of a 'big surprise'?
metallicorphan on 1 Sep '10
I'd be surprised if Valve started using a modern game engine!
Jensonjet on 1 Sep '10
Half Life 2: Episode 3

Half Life 3

L4D PS3

Simples Very Happy !
StonecoldMC on 1 Sep '10
It's obviously NOT going to be Half-Life then, because that would not be a surprise now would it? Not unless that news comes with some sort of massive twist.
Mogs on 1 Sep '10
A PS3 exclusive. L4D 1&2 for PS3. Half Life 3?
basscadet on 1 Sep '10
I'd put money on none of them being Half-Life 3 or Episode 3.

Probably Portal 3 or Steam for Linux.
altitude2k on 1 Sep '10
Left 4 Dead 3 on PS3 would be a shocker
HBgamer on 1 Sep '10
portal 2 will also include episode 3 and a new version of team fortress. in other words - the orange box 2. that'd surprise me.

The biometrics thing makes me think that they might be working with nintendo on something for the vitality sensor.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 1 Sep '10
Nuclear Dawn, the remake will be one of them. You heard it here first Wink
AlexNuggz on 1 Sep '10
I think one big surprise will be Source². The old engine is way outdated and lacks the graphical punch of modern engines, it seems. I can't see HL3 being released on Source as it stands, it's just too big a step.

Other than that, I'd love to see Valve try an MMO..
Jez7 on 1 Sep '10
black mesa is being released by valve as the official remake of the original halflife, on Live,PSN and steam.

that would be a pretty awesome surprise.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 1 Sep '10
Orange Box 2. Including:

Black Mesa Source
Portal 2
Half Life 3

pleeeeeeeeese!
snips10 on 1 Sep '10
Please be L4D for PS3, Half Life 2 episode 3 and Half Life 3 Smile
thedriffter50 on 1 Sep '10
The word "surprise" does worry me that he isn't talking about any Half Life haha..
gothchild on 1 Sep '10
I think Source still has something to offer.

Check out Dear Esther, a remake being made on Source by Robert Briscoe.

After all this time you wouldn't find an official HL announcement to be a surprise?
altitude2k on 1 Sep '10
This is a play on the word big.

Valve have actually bought the rights to own "Snap", "Crackle" and "Pop" from the Rice Krispies.

Valve are the new owners of your breakfast gaming.
Fidel on 1 Sep '10
portal 2 will also include episode 3 and a new version of team fortress. in other words - the orange box 2. that'd surprise me.
i'd take an orange box 2 but only if black mesa source is on the disc.

i'd love em to do something on the wii.

i think the source engine still has some life in it yet. check this old trailer out: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/official-trailer-black-mesa/43238
ste hicky on 1 Sep '10
I agree with what others have said.

It'll probably be left4dead ps3 and something half life related.
blagger on 1 Sep '10
are these not the same guys who are currently developing Aliens:Colonial Marines?! me thinks that could be one of the announcements Very Happy
gez23 on 1 Sep '10
1) Half Life 3
2) L4D Ps3
3) Counterstrike 2

That last one is a really longshot though Wink
Dewin on 1 Sep '10
I can't believe people are saying Source looks outdated. Portal 2 looks great.

The engine was built so that they wouldn't have to keep building another every few years.
EthanWoods on 1 Sep '10
No that's gearbox. The only thing valve related they've done is the first expansion for half life. they're a completely seperate company.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 1 Sep '10
I put money on one of them being DotA related.
The Big F on 1 Sep '10
I would have thought L4D PS3 is a given now Valve are committing to the platform.
Conkers on 1 Sep '10
Steam ps3 - left 4 dead - half life2 episode 3 - I reckon
martinawatson on 1 Sep '10
half life or portal on the iphone/ipad. as they're now in bed with apple that would be quite a logical step. hey if it's good enough for id it's good enough for valve.

or as someone else said something with Nintendo.
shellster2 on 1 Sep '10
I love surprises, but then people speculate and I get my hopes up about a speculation (such as HL3) and then when it turns out that the surprise isn't what I'd been convincing myself it would be I am disappointed.

Saying that though, I hope it's HL3.
spam23 on 1 Sep '10
Typical valve fashion, drip feeding us minute details one month at a time. No wonder fat bottom was laughing he loves it.
anytime on 1 Sep '10
Counterstrike Source 2 and Half Life Episode 3 in one box. That would be a killer package.
Granny on 1 Sep '10
I'm thinking that the surprise will be related to the Half-Life series, idk if it will be Half-Life 3 though. I'm thinking it will be some more lame things like announcing L4D on the PS3, i mean no one cares that you will just make a game available for another console.... I WANT HALF LIFE 3. Twisted Evil
Slappy Bag on 1 Sep '10
Hmm, facinating stuff! I think there is a possibility that the first wil be related to PS3 and L4D. I'm guessing a L4D 'saga' which includes the first two games + DLC, and maybe a couple of extra bits.

The next, I am guessing will be something to do with Orange Box 2. As people have specuated above, I am thinking it is possible that it will include Episode 3 (as a way of apologising for the long wait), Black Mesa and another new IP.

Surprise 3 will be either a Half Life or Left 4 Dead MMO. Both would be excellent for one imo.

Knowing Valve though, it will be nothing like this at all!
monty_79 on 1 Sep '10
Please stop mentioning Left4Dead on PS3 - that's not a 'surprise'.
Mogs on 1 Sep '10

I'm calling one of the surprises a wii game. That would be truly surprising!

half life 1 black mesa release for xbox!(its already on ps2, you guys can stick to that copy!)
counter strike 2
half life episode3 or half life 3!!
lashed on 1 Sep '10
Gabe's going on a get-fit-quick scheme!
Kenjirus on 1 Sep '10
half-life 2: episode 3
followed by half-life 3
followed by something on consoles.

also, half-life 3 needs to be on source 2. source has kept up-well with newer engines considering it's age - portal 2 looks fantastic for example - but soon(er, rather than later) they're gonna have to take the next step...
tmten on 1 Sep '10
CS : S for XBLA
HL3
TF3

That would be a real kick in the nads for the Black Mesa crew!
altitude2k on 1 Sep '10
Half Life 2 Episode 3 I think could be one of them. Notice he said THREE announcements? Could be a little play on words maybe? Wink

Maybe something to do with, oh, let's say, updates for TF2 on Xbox? That would be sweet.

Can imagine Gabe saying 'Sorry, was meant to be Three announcement(s)' Razz

Also, something on Defence of the Ancients. Seems very likely after that Tweet.
The Sandbag on 1 Sep '10
Half-Life 3 (or episode 3), to be released a couple of weeks after announcement. Was due to be announced at E3 but was pulled due to the game needing last-minute polish.

Maybe some sort of HL/Portal crossover, as they both exist in the same universe. Co-op, one player plays gordon the other plays chel.

Valve reveals that L4D is also set in the HL universe and the Zombies are created by the Combine. The games are actually set during the war where the Combine invaded. Explains why humanity collapsed so fast and gave in (and gives a bit of consistency and background to ravenholm in the process)
morgadp on 1 Sep '10
It wouldn't be much of a surprise if it wasn't Ep3. Just like the last 3 years or so.
What would be a real surprise is them finally saying 'We're actually going to talk about Half Life.'
T4ln0y on 1 Sep '10
Left 4 dead PS3.Left 4 dead PS3. Left 4 dead PS3. Left 4 dead PS3. Left 4 dead PS3. Thats all I want from Valve. The only game that xbox owners have, that I am envious of. Nothing else. Then maybe new Half life.
leon452 on 1 Sep '10
Half-Life and/or Portal for the 3DS.

NaththeNarc on 2 Sep '10
God here we go, what's the betting its something snore-worthy like STEAM has been made mod-able or TF2 coming to DS or LFD2 receiving more DLC maps.

In recent times Valves BIG SURPRISES IN STORE announcements have usually led to stuff thats only really exciting for anyone not waiting for news of Episode 3, i,e not many people.

So bloody finally give us HL2 Ep 3 and prove me wrong Gabe, dammit!
