Valve has promised "at least" three "big surprises" for gamers in the next 12 months. Half-Life 3, anyone?
Unfortunately - in typical, teasing style - it refused to be drawn on any detail of what the surprises entailed.
Speculation over a Half-Life 2: Episode 3 announcement was rife before E3 in June, but never materialised. Valve cancelled a planned press conference at the LA Expo very suddenly - which was supposed to reveal a "surprise".
Maybe that was one of the three?
"I can guarantee you people are going to be surprised at stuff we do. That isn't going to stop any time soon. I'm just laughing because... people will be shocked again," Valve boss Gabe Newell told the latest issue of PC Gamer.
"We have three pretty big surprises in the next 12 months at least."
Bring 'em on, Gabe. Bring 'em on.
Newell has also revealed that Valve is working hard on biometrics to better understand their customers - and, potentially, to bring freaky new heart-monitoring thrills to gameplay.
You can read the full, fascinating interview with Valve on its history in PC Gamer UK - which is with subscribers now and in stores tomorrow.
It's obviously NOT going to be Half-Life then, because that would not be a surprise now would it? Not unless that news comes with some sort of massive twist.
I think one big surprise will be Source². The old engine is way outdated and lacks the graphical punch of modern engines, it seems. I can't see HL3 being released on Source as it stands, it's just too big a step.
Other than that, I'd love to see Valve try an MMO..

After all this time you wouldn't find an official HL announcement to be a surprise?
portal 2 will also include episode 3 and a new version of team fortress. in other words - the orange box 2. that'd surprise me.
i'd take an orange box 2 but only if black mesa source is on the disc.
i'd love em to do something on the wii.
i think the source engine still has some life in it yet. check this old trailer out: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/official-trailer-black-mesa/43238
half life or portal on the iphone/ipad. as they're now in bed with apple that would be quite a logical step. hey if it's good enough for id it's good enough for valve.
I love surprises, but then people speculate and I get my hopes up about a speculation (such as HL3) and then when it turns out that the surprise isn't what I'd been convincing myself it would be I am disappointed.
I'm thinking that the surprise will be related to the Half-Life series, idk if it will be Half-Life 3 though. I'm thinking it will be some more lame things like announcing L4D on the PS3, i mean no one cares that you will just make a game available for another console.... I WANT HALF LIFE 3.
Hmm, facinating stuff! I think there is a possibility that the first wil be related to PS3 and L4D. I'm guessing a L4D 'saga' which includes the first two games + DLC, and maybe a couple of extra bits.
The next, I am guessing will be something to do with Orange Box 2. As people have specuated above, I am thinking it is possible that it will include Episode 3 (as a way of apologising for the long wait), Black Mesa and another new IP.
Surprise 3 will be either a Half Life or Left 4 Dead MMO. Both would be excellent for one imo.
Knowing Valve though, it will be nothing like this at all!
half-life 2: episode 3 followed by half-life 3 followed by something on consoles.
also, half-life 3 needs to be on source 2. source has kept up-well with newer engines considering it's age - portal 2 looks fantastic for example - but soon(er, rather than later) they're gonna have to take the next step...
Half-Life 3 (or episode 3), to be released a couple of weeks after announcement. Was due to be announced at E3 but was pulled due to the game needing last-minute polish.
Maybe some sort of HL/Portal crossover, as they both exist in the same universe. Co-op, one player plays gordon the other plays chel.
Valve reveals that L4D is also set in the HL universe and the Zombies are created by the Combine. The games are actually set during the war where the Combine invaded. Explains why humanity collapsed so fast and gave in (and gives a bit of consistency and background to ravenholm in the process)
It wouldn't be much of a surprise if it wasn't Ep3. Just like the last 3 years or so. What would be a real surprise is them finally saying 'We're actually going to talk about Half Life.'
Left 4 dead PS3.Left 4 dead PS3. Left 4 dead PS3. Left 4 dead PS3. Left 4 dead PS3. Thats all I want from Valve. The only game that xbox owners have, that I am envious of. Nothing else. Then maybe new Half life.
God here we go, what's the betting its something snore-worthy like STEAM has been made mod-able or TF2 coming to DS or LFD2 receiving more DLC maps.
In recent times Valves BIG SURPRISES IN STORE announcements have usually led to stuff thats only really exciting for anyone not waiting for news of Episode 3, i,e not many people.
So bloody finally give us HL2 Ep 3 and prove me wrong Gabe, dammit!
