Apple to make gaming announcement tonight?

Special London event incoming

Apple is to hold a special event in London tonight - where CVG understands it is planning to make a new product announcement.

The soiree will be streamed on the Apple website, we've been told.

We just called Apple and had a chat to them about all this, but were informed that we couldn't quote the person on the end of the line as they "weren't a spokesperson". Even though they worked in the PR dept. Intriguing.

Speculation is rife that the announcement may be gaming related - and could even reference Apple's long-dormant Apple TV.

Analysts have forecast that the TV market could be ripe for Apple's next invasion - and that gaming could be an ideal Trojan horse with which they can infiltrate the sector.

Stay tuned on CVG - we'll have the news as it happens.

Apple could announce a £5000 empty plastic box and it would sell like hot cakes. All Applevangelists would say, "It really is the best empty plastic box", while sneering down their noses at inferior empty plastic boxes.

even if they did release a console we all know apple like to charge over the top prices and wouldnt be able to compete with the cheapness of xbox and ps3
RandyNinja on 1 Sep '10
Smug meddlesome irritants.

Sorry Mac people but I just want to jump up and down on Apple products. Ideally with Steve Jobs face underneath them.

And/or those nutters who queue for weeks to buy a slightly updated SKU...

Is that what Nokia, LG and Sony said about Apple's venture into mobile phones?

Too expensive etc... I think not.

I hope they do, friend had his ipad delivered last week , piece of genius. I use PCs but must admit that Apples operating system is (and has been for years ) vastly superior to windows.
The apple tv has the smoothest interface , i mean itunes wins over any other music digital download service , hands down , everyone knows that , what people may not know is that it translates across the other products they make.
They are also not always overpriced , the top of the range is at the moment , however at one point they were offering a dual chip quad core (so 8 full cores) with top of the range nvidea graphics at a stupidly reasonable price , a good grand less than many other windows based systems.
Intel has a 6 core chip at the top of there range , like Sony Nvidea is also used by Apple for graphics solutions. At this point Apple could announce a console with more power than any other machine , with the smoothest most intuitive interface and linking to iphones and ipads, that sits under your tv and also delivers the best computing experience to boot.
Think in reality though they are going to announce smaller ipads and changes to the ipod touch.

You beat me to it. Remember, anything that's not apple is by default inferior, even plastic boxes.
grimlock047 on 1 Sep '10
if they did release a console i bet it would make the launch price of the PS3 look like a bargain.

It'll be £700, be only marginally better than a 360, and have more shovelware than the complete back catalogue of the wii and PS1 and 2 combined. and probably be digital distribution only. via the app store.

That is a massive joke, and I couldn't disagree more. OSX is almost like it never left beta Wink

Joking aside it's a very pretty, yet flawed (and worryingly insecure) piece of software.

@martinwatson

ipad is just a huge ipod touch its not genius at all its taking a product they allready have and make it bigger... and regards to apple os being better than windows os you obviously dont know what your talking about.
RandyNinja on 1 Sep '10
God i hate Apple. They actually make me feel good about Microsoft. And that makes me feel dirty. and Sad. My problem is that i feel too much. Stupid Apple.

How can that be when a windows computer does more?

And the ipad a piece of genius? You mean the product that is creating a mraket that is not needed? Why pay over the odds for it when I can buy a laptop, that multitasks and has flash, for cheaper and not be tied to the money grabbing machine that is the app market
sjholland87 on 1 Sep '10
If you think an Ipad is just a large Ipod then it just goes to show you fit the typical Apple detractor stereotype i.e you know f**k all about the product but still persist in berating Apple because they don't fit your perception of value vs the mainstream.

What are you talking about , insecure , eh , am i on planet mongo. Almost like its not out of beta,,,sheeit , Hello . Quite a lot of viruses on windows by the way , Vista was a very (and i mean very)poor attempt at Copying what Apple had done two years before.
My friend mainly uses macs and ive seen his machines crash or lock up, once perhaps twice in 15 years , my windows based machines (like all of us ) couldnt boast anywhere near that success rate.
martinawatson on 1 Sep '10
why do these arguments always happen! I work on both PC and mac at my office i have to no choice about it, as we program on .net servers and thats how its set up but as a designer all our stuff is on mac servers.

Which is better the mac pro or the equally spec PC? = the god dam mac!

its just fact, it works when you need it to work its not plagued with viruses and I can run more programmes at once, the PC has terrible memory leaks and has no idea what to do apart from restarting it to fix the problem (IT dept will tell you that fixes 98% of windows problems!)

I can't comment on w7 but soon I will be using so I can only hope they have sorted it out as unlike you fan boys I need both, so when one doesn't keep up you know about it!

We all know apple is just updating the nano and apple tv which can likely play games. Apple do things well thats why there getting to the top, like it or lump it they know what people want. And who ever mensioned that sony was cheap is having a laugh there in the same league for pricing as macs and thats why you get the quality!

for somebody who uses alot of computers you have never tried windows 7...... iv never heard of such things and compared to apple sony are alot cheaper. why does it allways seem like when somebody says that they think macs better they dont know a thing.

Bang on!

Windows is perhaps more accessible but the Mac OS is still far superior to Windows 7. I run both and Windows 7, whilst a big improvement over previous systems, is still glitchy, drops information often and is simply not as fluid or user friendly as Snow Leopard or even the previous Leopard/Tiger versions. People should really know the facts before spouting such c**p.

"My friend", eh? Well I'm actually calling on firsthand experience.

In our office we are required to have fully functioning versions of Linux (suse and red hat), Windows (XP, XP 64-bit, Vista, 7, Server 2003 and Server 200Cool and MacOSX. We use them regularly to test software, and I can tell you than Windows (even Vista) handles everything we throw at it far better than any flavour of Linux or MacOS (which is pretty much another flavour of Unix). This includes performance in processing and graphics as well as frequency of crashing and errors.

In amongst some dubious grammar and punctuation, I believe you say about there being quite a lot of viruses that specifically target Windows. Well yes there are. However there are far far more security exploits around for Linux and OSX, you simply don't hear about them because of their limited market share.

Windows has, what, a 90% market share at the moment? Maybe more? If there are going to be any security exploits around you can be damned sure you'll hear about it in the general press. They're not going to offer the same coverage to an OS that holds a 2% market share are they? Rolling Eyes

Sorry but my windows laptop never crashes! If it crashes, it is something the user is doing wrong. Or they are still on windows 98 or 2000. That old chestnut is an atypical response from the fanbois considering windows 7 is a very stable OS

Macs are fine, but the way Apple behaves is shockingly bad towards their consumers. Im not saying MS is any better in its business practices but at least I have a choice of applications and software that Apple doesnt provide. The 'Approved Apps' model is there for one thing and one thing only, and the recent ruling allowing user to jailbreak their iphones stated as much - its not about protecting copyright, its about monopolising the market for their own benefit.
nathar on 1 Sep '10
Apple do things well thats why there getting to the top

Technically, apple aren't getting near the top. There was the claim they are the biggest tech company monetary wise but that is because they sell products at a premium so get more money. The 2 biggest tech companies in the world based on profit margins and revenue streams are still HP and Microsoft because more people use and buy there products.

Until Apple have a majority market share, they can never be considered near the top as, although they have the most amount of money, are no where near the profit margins of the other 2 companies.

It's like Ferrari. Yes they have lots of money and produce nice stuff but their profit margins and revenue streams are low so are no where near the top.
sjholland87 on 1 Sep '10
i think it really depends what you're using them for. I have never had any joy using macs, The whole crap about them never crashing is a complete lie. Well at least when you're trying to edit video on them anyway. I don't know for the life of me why its bacome standard practice to use them. They lock up, they crash, they take forever to stream anything. you make minor adjustments to anything and they have a fit.

Thats just my own experience.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 1 Sep '10

Yet they have escaped anti trust lawsuits. It never makes sense this one!

I was about to point this out. Apple do the same practices as microsoft (safari and itunes on every mac as default applications anyone!?!) yet they escape it.

And what cracks me up even more is without mr. gates reducing the price of BASIC license to help apple, then apple wouldn't exist

@KK-Headcharge78

i own one thats how i know you idiot. i also own a ipod touch and its basically the same just a bit quicker my brothers iphone 4 wipes the floor with ipad. its like you cant say a bad word against apple because all these tech newbies think they know everything. windows beats mac hands down for price and value.
RandyNinja on 1 Sep '10
f^cking hell. slagging apple off all the time when you probably don't own any apple products is not cool. it's f^cking crap.

i'm a fan of MS and Apple and own products by both. windows 7 is great and so is OSX. apples iphone/ipod/ipad interface is just awesome. not like the jerky sh1t you see on the HTC phones i've had the misfortune to play with (although that was about a year ago).

i hate all this apple bashing it's SO BORING. get over yourselves.

steve jobs can be a c**k, and the tw@ts who lick apples ar$e are a f^cking joke and need shooting or something but the products themselves are great. and yeah 'they just work'.....a bit like windows 7 as well. amazing isn't it?

Leaked reports suggest that by holding the controller in the bottom left hand corner, it will cease to work properly.

Apple tell people they're holding it wrong.

Ok , Ok Time out , just to explain "my friend" (and business partner) , who has spent a large amount of time sitting next to me using various macs has demonstrated various bits and bobs which have hugely impressed me , from my point of view its (honestly) better for a number of reasons. I dont work in a computer lab testing every connotation of operating system on every bit of hardware , equally , my mac sporting buddy hasn't edited much video, so there may well be nuances (and facts)that i am not aware of, and i certainly dont want to get drawn into a flame bait war over operating systems, think my brain would implode.
Ive spent the last couple of months (just a couple of hours a week), trying to train up pensioners how to use a computer to surf the net and use a computer. I had a good laugh with the old folks and have opened there eyes to a number of things they had no idea about.
In my view , i think the immediacy of pressing a button on the screen , or pinching to resize , or flicking to move something away , would of allowed me to get much further with them ,as its totally (naturally) intuitive.
I also have worked extensively with severely disabled and young children, equally brilliant for them , so many fantastic apps to supercharge learning , theres a free interactive toy story book or a brilliantly interactive periodic table, which is learning without feeling your learning, if you have young children , dont listen to anyone else , buy it and supercharge your kids learning.
I feel that Men and technology promotes the same sort of thinking as does men and bbq's , ie men standing around feeling very important , discussing the flames , cooking techiques , and basically its just a bunch of sausages(and b******s really).
I think some people on here need to mentally reframe there view of what a computer is and what it should do for you.
What a huge joke the nintendo wii was at the time, "you mean i have to wave a stick around to control a game , that's ridiculous" people would type, so obviously its really important to keep an open mind re technology
I love the ps3 and am a sony fanboy if the truth be known, however other technologys that im impressed with and excited by include kinect , cloud gaming, 3d tv , and apple, its all coming and keep an open mind i say.
re mi gramma ,cant bebovered to check wen inspiration strike mi vew iz the mac and ipad are totally penge and i wudd hav them in a flash iv given to me ,anything else wudd be an epic fail,
cheers

There's no question that Apple have designed the usability of their software very well, but in my experience it's simply the sugar-coating to a very bitter core.

An intuitive user interface is fine, so long as the OS is able to do everything you want it to do, and do it without any hiccups. Apple simply didn't have the most important bit nailed down - the core OS - before sorting out all the pretty fluff on top.

Randy I also own both and I don't agree they are the same only bigger. Basically, the iPod is an mp4 player. Almost like a cell phone (unless it's the iPhone), it is designed to be an on-the-go device for all of your music and videos.

On the other hand, the iPad is a tablet - a whole different type of electronic. Tablets are just like netbooks - basically, laptops, but more portable and practical. The iPad is more like a big touch-screen netbook or laptop that you can take around. Better internet, larger computing capabilities, and transfer large files.

So the iPod is an entertainment device - for listening, watching, having fun, and the iPad is a tablet that can be used for many things from business, watching films in a credible display with a higher resolution, net surfing without fiddling with the screen constantly to reading newspapers in full.

Hardly the same thing. As for your learned judgement on Windows vs Mac OS don't be surprised if Which? magazine don't hurry to you for a credible review of the two as it appears you are purely interested in price and well price.

price is hardely a thing i have a £1200 pc running on a 40 inch 3dtv the fact is that apple over price both the iphones and ipod touches are great theres no denying that but if you want a computer you go for a pc because mac a gimmick the same as if you want a phone you go for iphone

Hmmm... I fear I may have to purchase an I-pad. If they ever get it workingwith Photoshop and a stylus I'd have a portable art studio. And that would be 'kewl'.
MrPirtniw on 1 Sep '10
Your quote was 'windows beats mac hands down for price and value' i.e the same thing, that was my point. If you want to dick wave then I have a £1,700 IMac with 27" LED screen running @ 2.7Ghz with 4GB and a 1TB hardrive which naturally could be connected to my 55" Samsung LED but thats for games and films. My Mac is for work and having run a business for over 10 years it is not a gimmick but an infinitely quicker, simpler and productive alternative to the glitchy programs, poor customer care, crap compatibility and generally unreliable nature of PCs.

People go for Iphones because aside from some of the Blackberry models (Bold in particular) they p**s from a great height on pretty much all other phones now in the market for apps, software, compatibility, music, photos, video, email and SMS because they are technologically advanced, user friendly and highly accessible- the fact they are 'fashionable' is a factor but not a significant enough of one for people to claim this is the only reason the consumer buys them.

You have your opinion I have mine Smile

Hi Mr P, have you seen this wot Stephen Fry found (n's**t)defo kewl. Its a app which means you can do some art , while on the go

http://andfinally.tv/2010/07/21st-century-finger-painting-theres-an-ipad-app-for-that/

professional results if you've got the skills.

PS If we are dick waving , i run a quad core intel i7 pc ( which i built myself , doesn't crash really , although did think it would have more umph to be honest) with a cracking nvidea card (now beaten by the fermi obviously) , both my pc and ps3 are fed into my projector 1080p on a 7ft screen , games and ...errr ..um ..art films , look very nice on it.

£99 for a box that streams video? Yes, I'd say that's a rip off considering you can get arcade 360s for around the same price that will do the same job as well as being a games console.
