Letters: Moral of Harold Macmillan's coat
Thursday, 13 May 2010
When I was around eight years old I went on my first school coach-trip to London. I remember it as being a cold, grey day with plenty of walking to be done. I also recall the boat trip down the Thames from Westminster Bridge to Greenwich.

Can anyone who read Richard Moore's illuminating article ("Vote for fair votes: clamour for change grows", 2 May) doubt that the time has come not only for a referendum on reform of the voting system? It is also time to implement in Britain the single transferable vote, as opposed to the much weaker system of AV or AV-plus, as recommended in the Jenkins report in 1998. The alternative is to continue with the present system under which many people feel effectively disenfranchised.

Gordon Brown's slur against an ordinary pensioner asking intelligent questions about pensions and immigration is a window into the contemptible mind of the real bigots in this affair, the sneering elitists of New Labour. This cabal of the politically correct takes the view that when working people question Labour's policy of uncontrolled immigration from Eastern Europe on the grounds of economic opportunity and housing availability, they are racists or fascists. In reality, it is Brown & Co who are playing the race card when the reasonable voter is asking a question about limited space and job opportunities on our island.
Letters: Cameron can't go back to the past
Friday, 30 April 2010
From where David Cameron looks down, he may well see a broken society when he comes down into it. I don't from where I am. I see people of all ages dealing with what we have now as opposed to what we used to have, and doing a good job of it. They haven't broken society.
Letters: Youngsters learn to take a dive
Thursday, 29 April 2010
You report on stories of cheating on the school playing fields (26 April). A football school for youngsters is run near our home every holiday; as well as skills tuition there are games for the various age groups to practise what they have learned.

David Cameron and Jeffrey Sachs are right when they say "we need targeted action to support women the world over" and strengthening the voice and role of women so that they are involved in the decision-making process is crucial ("Educated women hold the key to ending poverty", 18 April).
Letters: How we retreated from the land
Friday, 23 April 2010
Peter Marren has highlighted how the deepening divide between people and Nature is bad for our well-being ("It's time to grasp the nettle", 20 April). This is not surprising, since Homo sapiens is essentially an outdoor animal, even though our present-day lifestyles contrast dramatically with those of our distant ancestors.
Letters: The City destroys jobs in industry
Thursday, 22 April 2010
Recently, I had a letter from George Osborne. One of the points he made was the Tories' plans to train 400,000 apprentices over two years.
