Lembit Opik, Backstage Comedy Club, London (Rated 2/ 5 )
Friday, 4 June 2010
There was a kind of bittersweet irony that, on the day of the first Prime Minister's Question Time of the coalition government, the former Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Opik was performing an open-spot stand-up gig in a tiny basement comedy club. Opik, arguably, has performed comedy in a niche environment on both sides of the election.
First Night: Lembit Opik, Backstage Comedy Club, London (Rated 2/ 5 )

There was a kind of bittersweet irony that, on the day of the first Prime Minister's Question Time of the coalition government, the former Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Opik was performing an open-spot stand-up gig in a tiny basement comedy club. Opik, it could be argued, has performed comedy in a niche environment on both sides of the election.
Warning: May Contain Nuts, South Street Arts Centre, Reading (Rated 4/ 5 )
Thursday, 20 May 2010
At a time when many comedians see being controversial as an excuse to aim for cheap laughs, a "taboo-busting evening" may not appear too enticing.

John Bishop: Elvis Has Left The Building, Hammersmith Apollo, London (Rated 3/ 5 )
Monday, 10 May 2010
If you had told me last August that I would be seeing John Bishop's Edinburgh show performed at the Hammersmith Apollo nine months later, I would have bet against it.
Shappi Khorsandi, Soho Theatre, London (Rated 3/ 5 )
Friday, 7 May 2010
The last time I saw Shappi Khorsandi was in the studio of Soho Theatre, but her accession to playing the main theatre space is one of the smaller boons to her career in recent years. The Anglo-Iranian comic has enjoyed coverage on TV shows ranging from Friday Night with Jonathan Ross to Question Time and seen her book A Beginner's Guide to Acting English win her new fans away from the comedy scene. Her act itself, however, makes a sporadic case for its own betterment.
Altitude Festival, Méribel Auditorium, France (Rated 3/ 5 )
Wednesday, 7 April 2010
Outside the Auditorium in Méribel's main square, a miniature snowpark had been set up.
Channel 4's Comedy Gala, The 02, London (Rated 3/ 5 )
Thursday, 1 April 2010
There was a curious mix of something old, something new, something borrowed (such as BBC stars Catherine Tate, Rob Brydon, James Corden and Ruth Jones) and plenty of blue for this mammoth charity gig housed by a venue that was once itself a standing joke when it was the Millennium Dome.
