27 May 2010 00:00:47 BSTSmaller businesses may be hard pressed to compete profitably in the mainstream “fly and flop” travel market, but, for the growing number of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) dipping a toe in sustainable tourism, the onset of the holiday season could offer rich pickings.
27 May 2010 00:00:29 BST"I never see my friends. I never have time to read a Sunday newspaper. It has taken over my life." The writer and broadcaster Toby Young is reflecting in the garden of his west London home on the personal cost of spending the past 12 months trying to set up a parent-promoted school in Acton. "And," he adds with a laugh, "there isn't even a guarantee that I will be able to get my own kids in. I'll have to apply for a place like any other parent."

I avoided all media coverage of 'Four Lions' until I had seen it for myself. Usually I can't help myself from immersing myelf in new and reviews surrounding any new controversial films or other media, reading tabloids that I would never want to be seen dead with just to see what views they may be pumping out to readers who have not yet seen whichever film yet believing whatever they are told about how racist or anti-semetic it is or how it will most probably turn their children into psycho murderers. This film was different and something made me want to see…
It was number 287 in my series, asked by Charles Arthur a month ago: Has Apple really passed Microsoft in market value? And now it has. Charles comments here. The New York Times reports: In intraday trading shortly after 2:30 p.m., Apple shares rose 1.8 percent, which gave the company a value of $227.1 billion. Shares of Microsoft declined about 1 percent, giving the company a market capitalization of $226.3 billion. The only American company valued higher is Exxon Mobil, with a market capitalization of $282 billion.

27 May 2010 00:01:47 BSTLiverpool were facing the grim prospect of scaling down their aspirations from those of past seasons last night as co-owner Tom Hicks, whose US baseball team has filed for bankruptcy, raised the prospect of the club being under his ownership for a further 18 months.
27 May 2010 00:00:01 BSTEngland will defeat Bangladesh in the first Test match of the summer starting at Lord's today. It may take them until Monday if it rains; Sunday if it does not, the tourists put up a hell of a fight and the home side play badly; Saturday if England play well and boldly and Bangladesh are outclassed; Friday if England are outstanding, their opponents are hopeless and the pitch is lively. There has never been a one-day Test.

The new Government's education policy is based on a beguilingly simple idea: give schools greater freedom. Ministers want to allow state schools to become independent academies, liberated from the control of local councils. They also intend to encourage parents, social entrepreneurs and charities to set up their own schools and run them in the manner they see fit.
27 May 2010 00:00:01 BSTIn the mid-1990s, the development of anti-retroviral drugs was hailed as the answer to a modern plague. By converting a lethal infection into a chronic disease, which sufferers could live with rather than die from, they transformed the outlook for millions.
