Xbox Slim revealed, ships TODAY

Everything you need to know about the new model here
Microsoft's just revealed the Xbox 360 Slim - and it ships in North America TODAY. Here's everything you need to know about the sleak new model.

Unfortunately the UK will have to wait until July 16 for the new console, which sports a 250GB HDD, built-in Wi-Fi and is "ready for Kinect".

It also looks like it sports some pretty beefy ventilation shafts on the sides. That'll mean any internal fans can run a little quieter. In fact it's not just quiet, the Microsoft website describes the slim as "silent"

The new model is said to retail at $299 in the US.

The Slim will come to the UK on July 16 and retail at £199. The same price as we've been paying for an Elite.

The Xbox 360 slim has been highly anticipated in the run up to the Microsoft conference. Leaks began to seep through the internet cracks in the run up to E3.

An Italian advert for the 360 slim pretty much outed the new model along with the 'Kinect' name yesterday.

Microsoft announced that everyone at its E3 conference will receive a 360 Slim for FREE. GITS.

Official specs:

  • Form: Sleak, lean and gloss black finish with chrome accents.

  • Touch sensitive: Turn the Xbox 360 on and off and eject discs with the swipe of a finger.

  • Whisper quiet: Whether you're playing a DVD disc or from the hard drive, or navigating the dashboard, with the all-new and much quieter Xbox 360.

  • Wi-Fi: Built in 802.11n Wi-Fi for fast, easy connection to your friends and entertainment on Xbox Live.

  • Hard Drive: 250GB internal, swappable hard drive. To access, remove the bottom panel by pushing the small tab toward the front on the console.

  • Kinect-Ready: Custom Kinect port on the back of the console that directly hooks up to the Kinect sensor.

  • USB slots: Five USB ports, three in the back of the console and two in the front for easy plug and play.

  • AV Connections: AV cable included, HDMI port, Optical Audio out port for AV system connection.

  • Power Supply: Smaller and more efficient.

  • Wireless controller: Matches new console in all black with colour matched thumbsticks and d-pad with a touch of gloss and chrome.

  • Backward Compatible: All games will work with Xbox 360 250GB (360 External Hard Drives and Memory Units not compatible).

  • Accessories: Customize your 360 250GB with matching black acxcessories, including favourites such as controllers, wireless headset, chatpad, quick change and play and charge kits.

  • Key Internal Components Changes: One large more efficient fan rather than two small ones, 45 nanometer and integrated CPU and GPU, Wi-Fi integrated.

Mmmmgrolsch on 14 Jun '10
Just watched this live. when Matt announced it that he giving one to everyone in the theatre TODAY for FREE, I shouted at the top of my voice, BASTARDS!!!!!!

And the fact that its out TODAY is VERY good work on Microsofts behalf of keeping that one quiet.
I got 3 360s already, (3 x 360= Xbox 1080 anyone?) but I KNOW I NEED one of these!

IT'S YOUR FAULT CVG FOR NOT RECOGNISING MY TALENTS AND EMPLOYING ME AND WHISKING ME OFF TO LA!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
Crying or Very sad
paulhudd on 14 Jun '10
So much for there BIG announcement, big deal a slim xbox360 lets all rush out and buy one. How pathetic is that. Bigger than kinect they said YEAH RIGHT.
They even gave them all one for free so it would get good press.
anytime on 14 Jun '10
I love the hidden compartment which hides the little internal 250GB Drive, it means it's still upgradeable. Looks good. Very Happy
steve_2003 on 14 Jun '10
this was the only thing i liked reall, may get one
justforkicks101 on 14 Jun '10
A new slim 360 out and it was still a poor conference. That would seem to be the first time Microsoft has bombed at E3.

Poor show Microsoft, Poor show...

Physically, it is bigger than Kinect... Rolling Eyes
Padua on 14 Jun '10
My thoughts on the conference...

Started off very well(no stats, just straight to the games)
Cod black ops-Looks like a reskinned mw2 with a rambo wannabe. Tripe i won't be buying in other words.
Gears 3-Looking great
Halo:Reach-meh
Crytek exclusive-That has to be f**king cgi? looks like a god of war rip off to me.

Then a whole hour was wasted on natal which was just typical old cynical microsoft rehashing stuff for the wii which is "groundbreaking"

As for the slim, looks tasty, but the same price?
Microsoft never f**king change, it looks half the size of the fat one.

roll on sony...

The PS3 is my console of choice but even i was impressed with that Xbox conference, will it make me swing the other way, who knows?

Oooh i feel dirty for saying that...
JammyJames on 14 Jun '10
woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow

i HAVE to upgrade
WHEN IS THE UK RELEASE DATE
bpandor on 14 Jun '10
yeah, a little perplexed at that conference MS

they are seriously distancing natal ( kinect is s**t) from the gaming experience and re placing it in the "entertainment" genre, how many time did they say entertainment experience, maybe somebody should do a count.
never mind it looks mediocre and solid at best but hey ho, gears looked stunning, halo looked tidy and crytek exclusive looks the knuts.and whet my appetite for fable just that little bit more, not that it was needed.
roll on pay day and a nice shiny new mini 360 I wonder if they should rebrand it the 180..

hark
ewko117 on 14 Jun '10
I feel like selling my 360 washing my hands of microsoft and getting a ps3 now, slim 360 what a let down, and kinect? dont go there.
anytime on 14 Jun '10
Finally in built Wi-fi looks like i'll get one to go with my PS3..

So what 360 exclusives should I get 1st? Smile
damoxuk on 14 Jun '10
I bought a 360 arcade about 2 months ago, and I still wouldn't have shelled out the difference for this new slim model.

Pathetic at the end... giving one to everyone in the audience? Huh.... really?
gothchild on 14 Jun '10
Apparently it's not shipping here till 16th July. Evil or Very Mad
DaRockwilder1 on 14 Jun '10

Yeah, but for a new 250GB Wi-Fi enabled "Whisper quiet" 360 I can wait 32 days.

Also, it's nice to know that both the existing 120GB version & Arcade units are dropping in price to make way for it (as mentioned in the SpikeTV after show interview). Cool
steve_2003 on 14 Jun '10
I just hope my x clamp fix will get my 360 working or I'm 360less for a month.

Mind you, one of my 50 games machines should keep me happy for now. Smile
DaRockwilder1 on 14 Jun '10
Gorgeous, gorgeous system.

bpandor on 14 Jun '10
I will get this only if the wifi is 802.11N, if it Just 802.11g, i might skip it. My elite is doing good enough. Only reason to do it now is you get brand new warranty Very Happy
neohova on 14 Jun '10
It's 802.11N.

Play are taking preorders already. http://www.play.com/Games/Xbox360/4-/15570092/Xbox-360-Slim-with-250GB-HDD/Product.html

Strictly games that will be out when this comes out:

Gears 1+2.
Mass Effect 1+2
Alan Wake
Crackdown 2
Forza 3
Halo 3

I'd say Halo Wars as well, but I believe a sequel is incoming. Also, don't skip on XBLA releases such as Shadow Complex, Trials etc.
Black Mantis on 14 Jun '10
I didn't think they could do it, but they've made a console that's uglier than the PS3 Slim.

Looking at the back though - different DC in, possibly an on-board PSU? Also, it has an optical out on-board too, which is always good.

Won't be buying one though, my current model works perfectly fine.
Ror1984 on 14 Jun '10
I think it looks very nice, especially for an xbox(they've never looked good).Shame it took 4 years to get hardware near the 1st PS3 and will it work for long?
strickers on 14 Jun '10
MMmmmm looks the part and may get one but not yet, im gonna wait for the verdict eg how have they fixed the RROD problem "if ndeed they have or not". anyone know what the power output is? 150w or what?
Soviet1918 on 14 Jun '10
May get one myself but will give it a few months to see whats been said about it.
gogo65uk on 14 Jun '10
Why hasn't anyone mentioned the fact that it doesn't look any smaller or slimmer than the old one?

Do I have to do everything myself?
Paul the sparky on 14 Jun '10
Gloss finish = fail as you can see even the smalles amount of dust on it, matte is better

Wonder if this will get RROD, oh its microsoft so 99% probability it will
Skill_Machine on 14 Jun '10
After a MASSIVELY underwhelming conference, I'm really impressed with this. Really like the aesthetics of it, and it's got a lot of features that were missing on the original.

Can I justify getting it though - it IS just another Xbox...
_Marty_ on 14 Jun '10
Hang on ive just read this,,

Backward Compatible: All games will work with Xbox 360 250GB (360 External Hard Drives and Memory Units not compatible).
memory cards im not bothered about but what do they mean by External Hard Drives? does this mean you cant transfer saves/demos/ and so on directly to the other "250gb" drive, only via pen drive, i assume.
Soviet1918 on 14 Jun '10
Am i the only one who thinks that this slim doesn't look like look like its very slim?
Burney123456789 on 14 Jun '10
A gloss finish to the actual controller? Ugh, fingerprint central is what that is.
Athrun888 on 14 Jun '10
It looks cool- like an xbox but angrier. My current Xbox has served me well over the past 4 years though so I doubt I'll get one.

Hopefully CVG will get some comparison shots for us to see just how much smaller it is.
MrPirtniw on 14 Jun '10
Looks like my in car CD multi changer...
ei8hty5ive on 14 Jun '10
It's 802.11N.

Play are taking preorders already. http://www.play.com/Games/Xbox360/4-/15570092/Xbox-360-Slim-with-250GB-HDD/Product.html

Just checked out that page and one of the special features is 'noise reduction'. I would have hoped that would have been a standard feature by now ShockedVery Happy

Good to see built-in wifi, finally, but not keen on the new shiny finish, i prefer the current finish.

More info is needed though.

It means the original 360 hard drives do not fit it.
DaRockwilder1 on 14 Jun '10
So now it has everything that the ps3 slim has as standard except blu-ray.
Well. Its a step in the right direction.
Hopefully they won't all RROD...bet all the free ones do.
jazzy_p on 14 Jun '10
First of all I think it's a damn slick and mighty fine good will garnering, publicity stunt on behalf of MS to give everyone in attendance at their conference a new Xbox 360 slim for free. I suspect most of us would happily have accepted, yes, even those of you whom are deriding MS for this act. Petty jealousy and mediocrity are so unappealing - please grow up and demonstrate some self-confidence as opposed to trying to drown others with your own angst and insecurity.

As for the new Xbox 360 slim, personally I think it looks great. Finally a black Xbox 360 that actually looks good IMO (the Elite Xbox 360 looks cheap to my eyes). It would go very nicely with my piano black finish LCD TV and piano black finish front cover surround sound system. However, my white Pro Xbox 360 is fully operational, without any issues to date, and nowhere near a full HDD, and the two white, wireless controllers work splendidly as well. In short: I have absolutely no reason to purchase the Xbox 360 slim except for a desire to keep up with the Joneses. That urge is one I long ago learned to suppress so that it doesn't control me. Now if I were in a situation where my current Xbox 360 bit the dust, then I'd be happy to receive the Xbox 360 slim as a in-warranty replacement.
The_KFD_Case on 15 Jun '10
as someone who has only owned an XBOX360 this generation, and has no intention of owning a PS3, looking at their press release, I think it's mighty big of them to mention that the 'new' XBOX will be as quiet as a whisper, rather than the bleeding thing is waiting for clearance to takeoff.
DrLucienSanchez on 15 Jun '10
I'm gonna actually own up to quite liking the look of this!

Although, I'd bank that an instance of the RROD would be so much more apocalyptically brutal with all those shiny black surfaces! Surprised
PS3_fannyboy on 15 Jun '10
My piano black gloss finish LCD, and my piano black front cover surround sound system, not forgeting my PRO xbox 360, and my two WHITE wireless controllers. Yeah buddy your not insecure are you.
anytime on 15 Jun '10
Does anyone know if it will play blu-ray disc's
gregmofo on 15 Jun '10
New Xbox, same old disc destroying problems

If you own an Xbox 360 you know the most annoying thing about it is the RRoD. You probably know the second most annoying thing about it as well, and that is that it can scratch the sh*t out of your discs. Nothing like plopping down $60 bucks just to get home and have the game ruined because your console destroyed it.

You'd think this would be something the Microsoft would take care in their new version of the console since it seems they've taken care of many of the other issues the console had. Think again. Our intrepid E3 team tested the console out with an Alan Wake disc and then Nick decided to move it. Suddenly all hell breaks loose. Goodbye, Alan Wake.

Sure, there was a sticker on the damn thing saying not to move it, but it isn't like he was tossing it around the room. They're planning on having gesticulating children play Kinect anywhere near this thing? Some games are going to be getting destroyed, people. Looks like everyone needs to be really, really careful around their new 360s while they are on or their games are going to get wrecked.

Check out Destructoid . com for the vid Smile
pedroukuk on 15 Jun '10
the new slim has a far better prossessing chip than the original 360 and the ps3,it matches the usb ports the ps3 has the wi fi that the ps3 has, microsoft new 360 is now a better console then the ps3 mainly because of the new processing chip,it your a tech you all would know this ,plus most ps3 games run on 720 p,360 1080p,they got metal gear solid now on the 360 which was only on the ps platform, call of duty games come out first on the 360,gears of war 3,kinect...sony better come up with something huge, thats not including the new bigger harddrive, the silly motion stick, they dont have any big name exclusives comin out except for grand turismo, microsoft also got uncharted series on their console too...
julioaragon on 15 Jun '10
playstations online service stinks, they are gonna charge $10 american dollars a month for online service compared to 50 dollars a year for xbox live, plus ps3 you cant go online to use the internet,it does not include java, which u need on laptops and desktops
julioaragon on 15 Jun '10
Actually you can browse the internet on ps3, but i agree, 10$ a month is a joke, i've been playing ps3 online for free! btw were did you hear this? the sony conference hasn't even started yet Question
prof_crunchy on 15 Jun '10
Will people STOP calling it 360 Slim. CVG included.

Microsoft never called it that.

In other news the new 360 looks pimp. I find it ironic that PS3 became matt and went with cheaper features like press buttons, while the 360 gained the old piano black shiny PS3 finish and went with touch sensitive buttons.
