Rockstar: Red Dead horses are 'like nothing else in gaming'

But making them authentic was an "arduous and messy" process
Red Dead Redemption is impressive for a number of reasons, but Rockstar is understandably most proud of its horse motion-capture. Totally understandably.

The Red Dead development team have described the process of bringing the game's horsies to life as "long, arduous and messy" but it obviously paid off.

"[It] included sticking the little white balls all over the horse in order to get the most accurate capture data and picking them all up and sticking them back on when they would fall off," Rockstar told The PlayStation Blog.

"Once we had the capture data, it was a case of choosing the right breeds, watching films and videos of them in motion and even using some of our facial animation technology to recreate the muscle movements."

"We're immensely proud of the horses in Red Dead Redemption - they're like nothing ever seen in a game before."

There's more to Rockstar's Western than horses though, and much to be praised. Read our Red Dead Redemption review to find out why this game sold £10 million in two days.

I believe......but we must not forget epona in Ocarina of Time. That was a truly masterpiece and must have a true inspirator. I read in an interview that Epona too cost an huge amount af the dev's time back then.

i know this makes me sound sick and evil here but here goes anyway...

In RDR does anyone else find capping a horse in the head funny for some reason?

there I said it...

No, I just can't bring myself to kill horses or cows.....can't stop shooting birds though - I love picking off vultures after they start circling all the corpses after a gunfight.

Smile

i take even more delight in nabbing a new wild horse and shooting my old one in front of it (think you loose honor)...

I can't shoot the horses... generally. Last night I was doing the mission where you have to steer the wagon while being attacked by treasure hunters. And Marston just sits there. Not shooting back or anything. That really frustrated me, so after about 15 attempts I got off the wagon and shot the horses in anger. Incidentally, some of those treasure hunters are invulnerable, you can't kill them.
zombiesinmyhead on 28 May '10
yeah i had that where he just points at them. tis annoying.

Go shoot some horses to ease the tension.
snarf81 on 28 May '10
I have a lot more respect for the horse animations within Shadow of the Colossus. Team ICO didn't use any sort of motion capture whatsoever, they were all completely done by hand.

Still, R* have done a fantastic job.
I would loved to have seen that horse covered from head to hoof in ping pong balls. Laughing
Mr Pikmin on 28 May '10
Anyone messes with me in RDR, their horse is getting a bullet to the head too. In fact, I usually try to kill their horse first if they're riding it.

God, I hate horses.
Godlike Ape on 28 May '10
The horse controls are diabolical until you switch to camera-relative.

Now can we stop swooning over this overrated pile of boring? Lets start reporting multiple times per day on Mario Galaxy 2 or something, a game that lives up to it's promise.

and so it starts...

Build a masterpiece, and the detractors will come Rolling Eyes
FlimFlam on 28 May '10
I've only intentionally killed one horse, which was part of a mission to catch a criminal. My mule was stupidly slow and his stupidly fast so I couldn't catch him. After about 15 minutes of chasing him across the country I gave up and took the legs out from the beast.

That said, I have accidentally killed about 6 because they got in the way. Stupid animals. But hey, at least the skins are valuable.

Wow, I just realised what a nutjob I actually am...
Dajmin on 28 May '10
It's an incredible production in terms of scope, but a missed opportunity.

Rockstar conceptual meeting:
Ok we've built this huge world, now lets put nothing but grass and cacti in it. The main part of the game will involve slowly traversing the same barren terrain over and over on horseback. This should control horribly. Also you will be forced to herd cattle. Because that's not dull at all. Oh and also the gunplay aspect of it should be inferior to games that have gone before. Oh and on top of that we'll put loads of random activities in there, but won't make any of them fun or interesting.

This is based on 3-4 hours with the game, I admit. It might get better, but I got sick of waiting for that to happen.

What did you expect, the Wild West was a pretty barren landscape.

In the Western films I've watched (and I've watched a fair few), it's pretty clear that Red Dead has nailed the emptiness of the landscape along with all the activities that occured (even cattle herding).

Oh and horse controls? I and many others have had very few issues with them.
Moorpheus on 28 May '10
I have to agree with some of the previous posters on here. RDR isn't much fun..
Robzy1990 on 28 May '10
We've never seen good horses before RDR, or since. In fact sometimes not even in this game!
harky on 28 May '10

Well, that makes a lot of sense.
gravyboy on 28 May '10
Listen Gunstar - I love RDR but it sounds like you need to see the first 20 mins of Pale Rider where the whole 20 mins is Clint slowly riding a horse across a barren part of the west. No dialogue, no gunfire. Go see that and then RDR will really bite your biscuit!! Laughing

Oh and knifing wolves ftw
bigroy on 28 May '10
mario glaaxy 2 is a better game no question about it. even the first galaxy is better in my opinion.
i loved the horse back combat in twlight princess more 2.
rip_it_up on 28 May '10
To even compare RDR to SMG2 or any other first class platformer just shows ignorance and complete lack of understanding for either genre. You may as well compare driving your car to riding a motorbike. To comment on RDR after only four hours of play would also indicate the same level of stupidity. The campaign mode alone would have been enough to blow most games of recent memory out of the water but add to that the comprehensive multiplayer modes, well need I say more.
Oneohfour on 28 May '10
love my war horse Cool
alan666 on 28 May '10
i had difficulty at first with the horse, but i got used to it,and me and Boris now travel everywhere together(and if he dies somehow,i reload a save)

for those having a difficult time getting into this game, stick with it....FWIW this game had one of the slowest starts to a game ever(where i was wondering what the fuss was about),but its an absolute masterpiece now

i am half way through the Mexico missions

Game completed 56.0%
Total time played 40:47:35
metallicorphan on 28 May '10
they dont handle as well as the horses in assasins creed 2. but they better
User75 on 28 May '10
Its a great game but no legendary or anything because I agree that some things are just pure dull! The free roam, what a load of tosh, they said it would captivate like the single player, bollox!

You cant do anything from the single player in the multi! Would of loved to throw down some chips in a hand or 50 of poker or have a arm wrestle with friends, seriously theres no excuse for excluding everything from the single player for the online play because running round the vast land looking for some french tw@ to gun down kinda loose's its thrill after about 20 minutes and I h8 french people, no offense to any frenchies on here lol Cool

Im old school, and a big fan of Mario of old on the SNES, but if were on the subject of over rated games, Mario Galaxy is right up there, having played it.

they should take a look at LBP and go back to Mario´s 2D roots for me, and found Galaxy quite lame.

I havent played RDR yet, but it appeals a lot.

Tis a shame about the aimbot in multiplayer, it makes it to easy. And expert mode is to damn hard to hit them, I cant aim with my thumb for s**t. I used to be one of the best counter strike players in the uk about 5 year ago with a mouse, when it was around before source. Hate the damn thumbstick for aiming i hate it i just hate it.

Just saw my mates face on the like CVG thing on facebook at the side --->
laughed so hard I nearly chundered like a champion.

but yeah horses are kewl. x
NaththeNarc on 29 May '10
I'm at 95.5% complete, I have expert aiming and I have the map turned off now.

I orientate myself by the sun and road signs now and even the little random events are more involving when you're not just following a blip on your hud.

I'm polishing off the ambient challenges at the moment, hunting elk and bighorn in and around tall trees on foot is breathtaking, especially when you're being hunted by bear.

I love the game but I do understand that it will bore the pants of others. I really dig the immersion in this game though, it's incredible.
ledickolas on 29 May '10
I agree with you there it is really immersive, if there was ever potential for a game with regards to DLC to has got to be it. Shame i cant aim with a thumbstick. i hate thumbsticks for aiming. Rolling Eyes

yep, epona was all hand animated too in oot.

i've got to mention shadow of the colossus too: that games horse was a stubborn little f*cker and felt like it had it's own will.

mentioning zelda: the rumours are flying for e3 folks.

check this out: to quote HubbaNubbaMax from All is Brawl:

"More rumors from 2chan.

* Link will be replacing the bow and arrow with a crossbow.
* Game is all but finished. Putting on final touches.
* There will be a playable demo at E3.
* Time travel does occur and it happens through the use of a new blade. (not the master sword)
* Link's hometown is much bigger than in previous titles.
* There will be several "Majora's Mask" esque sidequests.
* Character interaction will be more involving than in any previous title.
* The dungeon field dungeon method is changed, and one of the changes confirms a straight dungeon to dungeon portion of the game.
* The current name of the girl in the picture is Adelle.
* Combat is extremely fluent and innovative. No previous Wii title can give you a good example of it's unique style.
* The game relies heavily on sword combat versus other items.
* There will be less items, but they will be used more frequently.
* There will be another main weapon added for an alternative combat style.
* The game will feature significant portions of flight."

bring it f*cking on. Very Happy

if that last one is true then, frankly,f*ck horses mate. i did that back in '98.

HA! HA HA HA HA HA HA!

Oh man, you're funny! Mario Galaxy 2 better than RDR? Only in bizarro land! Classic.
we must be in bizarro land then. galaxy 2 rapes nearly anything that's existed over the last 30 years and right now i could only put ocarina above it and half life 2 near it.

this isn't a slight on rdr, just a statement of how f*cking good galaxy 2 is and while comparing genres is akin to 'apples and oranges' comparing the relative amount of fun had on each game is not.

i think most multiformat gamers who try it will agree but if they don't: peace. i'm having one of the best times ever in over 20 years of gaming and,for me,that's all that matters.
ste hicky on 29 May '10
Cheers gravyboy. Trying some sort of joke about the invisible horses business. Not a good idea when drunk. Perhaps I should have said something like this.

Practically speaking of course it is much easier to animate invisible horses.
