Bethesda's Pete Hines has claimed that Doom 4 will "show the world id's true potential" when it finally hits shelves.
Very little is known about the FPS sequel currently. CVG revealed last year that fantasy author Graham Joyce is penning the story of the title - but no release date or screens have been released by Bethesda.
More details of the game are expected to be revealed at QuakeCon in August.
"id Software brings a wealth of experience and expertise in the first person shooter genre," Bethesda marketing boss Hines told industry magazine MCV this week.
"To have a group like id working as an internal studio for Bethesda is a tremendous advantage.
"I think what they're working on with RAGE and Doom 4 is going to show the world their true potential."
CVG reported earlier this week that RAGE would be released next year, as id strives to polish it to perfection.
The world has moved on. I'm yet to be convinced that Doom has stayed with it. Doom III packed shocks but no real scares and was a generic shooter. Pretty but bland.
Anyone remember the plot? There was this bloke who was bad, who went a bit mental and ..er...
What about the level design? I remember there were toilets, one of which had a shocking mirror but ... er..
Don't get me wrong, it was good and I played it to completion but it was no Half Life. Saying that, it was better than Quake IV...

The Martian labs were experimenting with portal technology, and accidentally opened a gate to hell. What's difficult about that plot?!
Far better than the movie's plot: "The Martian labs are researching the human genome, some kind of Martian virus causes people to get infected and end up recieving extra chromosomes, effectively giving them superhuman strength". No, no. That would be Downs Syndrome

Aye, but those babies were frigging terrifying, esecially the one I came across that had a glitch where it would se still and silent until you got close and then it went apes**t! I must have jumped about 3 feet in the air the first time I saw it.

The problem with Doom 3 was it took all that was good about the originals ie masses of enemies and little respite, and changed it to a much more sedate, 'couple of enemies at a time but we'll make you jump more', type of game.
Remake Doom / Doom 2 using the Doom 3 engine and I'd be as happy as Michelle McManus in a pie shop.
What I think would be interesting for Doom 4 would be an outdoor approach as well thus opening up the world. Hopefully that would take the game forward a lot and maybe with Rage it will just prove they can do it.
Personally, I thought Doom 3 was a great game. Yes it was a corridoor crawler, but it had atmosphere. The sound was great, the lighting effects were great and I really liked the level design. It was slightly claustrophobic, but it was that way for a reason. Bring on Doom 4!
